  • Is Sandwich Dial really more bright than normal dial?

    Hi all,

I have been thinking quite a while on this and like to bring this up & seek views of our fellow forum friends.

    1) Does Sandwich Dial really brighter than the normal coated dials?
I dont own a Pam but have seen friends with their normal dials & sandwich dials and both lume seems around the same. In fact, i believe non-sandwich dial should be slightly brighter as the number/indice are thicker(thicker font) than sandwich.

2)If sandwich is brighter, Why is it so? since the 'luminova' is the same. Or is it because the 'Luminova' is Thicker?

    3) Or is is that both are of same brightness except that the sandwich dial lume last longer? (due to its thicker content?)

4)Another related question: Why most brands (panerai, rolex, etc) dont use 'gas tubes' similar to those in Ball Watches? Isnt Gas Tubes suppose to be superior since they can lit up by itself.

    Thanks

In essence, you are more concern about sandwiched, embedded and painted dials. Which of these are more bright.. but to many of us..esp myself it does not matter. Most important is to be close to what history is. Like sandwich dial is for older days (fiddy) whereas embedded dial is more the vendome days. Other dial can be t-dial for Pre-V, Pre-A, A and some B and L-dial painted for contemporary..

    Hope this make sense
    I own a Rolex !

This, again, has been asked here and there are ready information. I recalled someone here has posted a link, on a research conducted on the Panerai's sandwiched and painted dial. I will not tell you the result but I tend to not believe it fully. I have compared both the different dials side by side and observed that the painted dial looked brighter, and the lume stayed longer.

This is purely my own observation.

I have the same observation as bro Oceanklassik.

My personal observation is that the painted dial is definitely brighter than the sandwiched dial.

It is pretty obvious when you placed the 2 dials side by side.

          Hi Bro

Both will glow much the same if exposed to full direct sunlight.. But Sandwiched dials tend to glow slower and die down faster, probably because of its sandwiched disposition.

The painted dials indices are not consistant in their thickness due to the different batches of application so even some painted dials glow better

If I am not wrong, this gas tube tubes technology only surfice much later. Panerai was the pioneer to use tritium in those days. Only when there was the radiation issue, where luminova was later used. luminova is a japanese invention..Gas tubes technology is not theirs and to to keep their DNA, I think, it will not be used...

My observation from brightest to less bright...

            1. L Swiss L
            2. Sandwiched
            3. L Swiss made L painted

              Hi,
              Thanks for the views.

By the way, anyone have any idea if the lume used in Panerai is same as those in Omega or Rolex? I think Omega & Rolex's lume material is different?

There's a link to a site talking about lume. You guys keen may check it out or just google on lume.
