To get a PAM Auto or Winding?

Get What YOU Want...
thats what most will tell ya.
If you wanna a Historical piece, manual winding is the way to go.
If you wanna Contemporary, get the auto then.
After owning both manual and auto Pammies, I would think the auto suits my lifestyle best.No winding requires(unless it has not been worn for sometime and it stops) and it has a date. But...the manual one is a joy to wind it. Its like bonding with my watch and Panerai is all about the manual which lead back to its roots.
So, yeah. Get what you want and what suits you and your lifestyle best.
Happy Panerai hunting.
Cheers.

I had a frd whom had a Panerai Submersible.dunno they exact model number as pardon me I am not really a pro in watches.
But after wearing it for 2 years or so (He bought it new as I go to Hour glass with him) so i know about it...
So yea, after wearing for 2 years the Hour Hand/Minute Hand start to oxidise with the small circle marking on it and it make the watch look like some old watch or some imitate watch...
As in if i do not go with him, I wud haf reckon tat the watch is fake, being that u pay about 10K plus or so for a watch but after 2 years it oxidise?
it just show tat the quality is not there and honestly speaking, after seeing his watch..my mind told me that I will not wanna buy a panerai.

i guess...
Pardon me if I am wrong in this and more pros bro could chip in to correct me. Panerai Sub hands has been known to oxidised but that is not an indication of how bad a quality or how terrible the make is. It has something to do with the Tritium that they used on the Sub hands. And due to this usage, the radioactive isotope of hydrogen, cause corrosion on the hands.
It has totally nothing to do with moisture getting into the watch or anywhere near that. This is through my limited knowledge on Panerai Subs, maybe the more knowledgable bros could correct me on this if I am off track.
I understand what you meant by the oxidation makes the Panerai watch looks like fake. I have a share on that experience once when I browse around to get my Sub fixed. You can refer to this post:
http://www.sg-roc.com/showthread.php?t=37007
I dont care if people thinks my Panerai with its oxidised hands are fake cause deep down I knew, that person knows nothing about it.
Panerai might now be appeling to you like how Rolex is not appeling to me. But I am happy with my Panerai. Its sings to me and but a bloody sinister smile on my face everytime I wear it.

I like to have date function on my watches and tend to swich between watches depending on mood, so got myself automatic Panerai; until I buy a manual winding 8-day 233 Prefer to pick up watch and wear, rather than having to wind & adjust time if not worn for a while. All about lifestyle as bro Ryuden said.

A) do you intend to wear the watch everyday?
B) do you mind winding the watch every morning?
If your answers to A) is yes, and B) is yes, please get an auto.
For me, I always thought that I wld get an auto over a manual anytime, but after getting into Pams, I now prefer manual over auto, and i actually enjoy winding it every morning."Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence,

Pam subs are known for this trait - some, like you, see it as a sign of poor QC, while others actually buy the watch only if the hands are oxidised. For me, I am still looking for one like that...."Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence,
three times is enemy action and
over 600 is clearly the work of an ancient Sumerian demon or some sh*t."

In my opinion, from value-for-money point of view...
- the entry level manual winding PAM using ETA 6497 modified movement have least worth. I believe the 6497 is a relatively cheap movement though it is a proven movement and enhanced to COSC standard by Panerai.
- the mid-range automatic PAM using ETA Valjoux movement are a better buy value wise but still expensive.
- the hingh-end range using in-house movement P2000 or P9000 serious, priced above $11K (I think) and onwards, though expensive, are actually priced more reasonably when compared with other makes with in-house movement.
All said, I do not deny that Panerai watches are damn good-look watches with excellent quality and successful branding that command some premium on price.
In fact I have been wanting and holding back on getting one as I have yet to convince myself whether to spend the least just to own a piece, or throw in my hard-earned money for the more expensive ones which I believe more worthwhile keeping...

IMO, I want a watch with date. I will buy a sports Rolex with date if I am shopping for one. Rolex with date retain value better unlike Panerai with date.
I will go for historic model which what made Panerai today. History, Heritage and meaning of Luminor case
I own a Rolex !

I am aware that there are many people who buy a very expensive watch without knowing what's inside the watch (apart for it's swiss mechanical maybe), and fully understand that owning a watch is an emotional thing for these people
And I suspect I actually belong to this group of people...with my head trying to justify another purchase before being overcome by my heart...Watches are like potato chips - You never stop at one
