What is the meaning of limited edition?

PAM 422 was launched as limited edition of 2000pcs.
What does that mean? manufacture 2000pcs in total before cease production or 2000pcs every year?
I see some used pcs being sold as O series and someone selling P series 422.

I think Panerai usually limit their production quantity on per year basis, and not limited to one-time production. Unless they specify it. I stand corrected.
