i'd go for a day-date diver type watch (the dive bezel can be used to time things).
my brother was in a similar situation as you were. i bought him a tag heuer waf2010 day date diver. he would have prefered a day-date chronograph as it had all the functions he needed but it was a bit too big for his wrist.
tissot and hamilton makes some day-date watches, quite versatile and will suit your budget.
the japanese day date watches have varying accuracy and cannot be reliably adjusted... unless you're on a budget, i would steer clear and stick to pre-owned ETA-based watches.
however, the japanese watches are nearly bullet proof and can go for a long time without servicing... some are completely customizable too. but i'm a bit of an accuracy freak... so...!“Watches, no matter how much they cost, are better at telling time than making a person happy.†- Thomas J. Stanley
