    Who Are They: The Swiss company was founded in 1917 to produce watch movements. It launched its first collection in 1957.

    Claim To Fame: Rado is seen as a pioneer in the use of scratch-proof materials like ceramic. In 1962, it launched the Rado Diastar Original, the world's first scratch-proof watch. It also pioneered the use of materials like lanthanum and sapphire crystal.

    What's Hot: The unisex Sintra Skeleton automatic. For women, it's the white Jubile, the latest in the r5.5 collection designed by British designer Jasper Morrison.


    RAYMOND WEIL

    Who Are They: Founded by Swiss watch designer Raymond Weil in 1976. His son-in-law, Olivier Bernhelm, joined the company in 1982 and now heads it as president and CEO.

    Claim To Fame: Sharing the same passion for the arts as its founder, the brand is closely linked to the arts, as is apparent in many of its designs and advertising campaigns.

    What's Hot: The Nabucco Va Pensiero chronograph in grey graphite, named after the famous chorus from Verdi's opera, Nabucco, also the name of his watch collection. For women, it's the diamond-studded Freelancer Summertime in three colours.


    RICHARD MILLE

    Who Are They: Formed in 2001 by watchmaker Richard Mille and his partner, Dominique Guenat, the Swiss company has produced some 28 different watch models to date.

    Claim To Fame: Its timepieces feature new materials, methods and watchmaking ideas. Inspired by Formula One racing, its first watch model, the RM-001, embodied the brand's philosophy of 21st century watchmaking with a futuristic design and cutting-edge technology.

    What's Hot: Two tourbillons - the ultra-thin RM 107 and second time zone RM 022 "Aerodyne" in a titanium-carbon nanofibre case - and RM 028 skeletonised diver's watch.


    ROGER DUBUIS (roh-zhay doo-bwee)

    Who Are They: Founded by watchmaker Carlos Dias in 1995 as the Societe Genevoise des Montres. In 2001, Manufacture Roger Dubuis was established. Since then, all its movements and parts have been produced in-house in Switzerland.

    Claim To Fame: Bold, avant-garde designs are the brand's signature style. Among its unique creations are the cross-cambered Follow Me series and iconic Golden Square line with its signature curved square-shaped checkerboard dial.

    What's Hot: The Excalibur minute repeater and double tourbillon, and the diamond-decorated Easydiver diver's watch for women.


    ROGER W. SMITH

    Who Are They: The independent English watchmaker aims to revive English watchmaking through his exclusive handmade timepieces, all of which are made in the Roger Smith Workshop on the Isle of Man, off the northwest coast of England. The brand also produces clocks and chronometers.

    Claim To Fame: Smith's watches are known for their classic appeal and pristine finish. The talented young watchmaker made his first two tourbillon pocket watches at the age of 22. Ten years on, he crafted his first collection of wristwatches, simply called Series 1.

    What's Hot: A series of co-axial watches his workshop are making for the great British watchmaker and Smith's teacher, George Daniels, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Daniel's unique co-axial escapement, which was adopted by Omega in 1999.


    ROMAIN JEROME (ro-mahn zher-rom)

    Who Are They: Launched in 2004, the brand debuted with a golf watch that doubled as a score counter. It has since diversified into fountain pens and cufflinks by riding on the success of its Titanic-DNA series.

    Claim To Fame: In 2007, the brand sparked controversy when it launched the Titanic-DNA collection that incorporates rusted steel and coal salvaged from the famous wreck into its watches, which have become highly sougt-after. It has since spawned several other collections.

    What's Hot: The one-only Eyjafjallajokull-DNA with a dial made with ash from the volcano in Iceland that erupted in May, throwing international aviations into chaos.

      Rolex

      Who Are They: Founded in 1905 by German watchmaker Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis. Long regarded as a status symbol, ROLEX is today the largest single luxury-watch brand with a production of 2,000 watches a day.

      Claim To Fame: In 1910, ROLEX was awarded the First Class Chronometer Certification for a wristwach. To date, ROLEX still holds the record for the most certified chronometer movements in the wristwatch category, and has established itself as a brand that's synonymous with achievements. It has also establlished the ROLEX Enterprise Awards, which recognises and assists in humanitarian efforts around the world.

      What's Hot: The Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date diver's watch with seaweed green dial and bezel, and Oyster Perpetual Datejust Lady with a wide range of dials and decors.

        SALVATORE FERRAGAMO

        Who Are They: Founded by shoe genius Salvatore Ferragamo back in 1920s, the family-owned, Florence-based company first found renown for its shoes. Today, its boutiques around the world also retail women's and men's ready-to-wear and accessories, as well as fragrances, beauty products and eyewear ranges.

        Claim To Fame: Ferragamo, who migrated to the US as a teenager, actually started out in Hollywood, where he made shoes for leading film stars in the 1920s, earning him the nickname "Shoemaker to the Stars". Though he went bankrupt in 1930, after moving his base back to Florence, he was back in business in Italy by the mid-1930s. From then until his death in 1960, his unusual designs and innovations - like the wedge heel made of cork, "invisible" sandal and ballerina shoe - made him world-famous and attracted a wealthy clientele. In 1980, the company launched ready-to-wear to complement its footwear, accessories and knitwear. In late-2007, it launched its Salvatore Ferragamo Timepieces collection of watches and now has five women's ranges - Assoluto, Gancino, Palagio, Salvatore Lady and Vara.

        What's Hot: The new women's watches including the graphic, rectangular Venna and the Gancino Fancy with printed straps.


        SARCAR

        Who Are They: Founded by watchmaker Carlo Sarzano in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1948.

        Claim To Fame: Specialises in solid gold watches with iconic diamond-studded dials. Their star watch is the Royal Solitaire, with a one carat brilliant-cut diamond that rotates around a diamond-studded dial, complete with a gold-and-diamond set strap.

        What's Hot: The full-diamond Royal Solitaire for men, and the diamond-studded Solitaire watches for men and women with signature rotating 1-carat solitaire on the dial.


        SEIKO

        Who Are They: Established in 1881 in Japan, Seiko produced Japan's first wristwatch in 1913.

        Claim To Fame: Its creation of the world's first quartz watch, the Seiko Astron, in 1969, revolutionised watchmaking. In 1973, it created the world's first LCD quartz watch with a six-digit digital display. In 1986, Seiko unveiled the world's first kinetic watch prototype at the BaselWorld watch fair.

        What's Hot: The Quartz Astron commemorative edition to mark the 40th anniversary of the original quartz Astron, and Ananta Spring Drive Moon Phase chronograph.


        SINN

        Who Are They: Founded in 1961 by legendary German pilot and flight instructor Helmut Sinn, whose aim was to produce watches for navigational purposes.

        Claim To Fame: Pioneered new technologies, such as oil-filled watch chambers that could withstand extreme pressures, argon gas-filled watches that prevent moisture infiltration, impact-resistant gear suspensions and new micro-lubricating techniques.

          TAG HEUER

          Who Are They: Founded in 1860 by watchmaker Edouard Heuer at St-Imier, Switzerland. Renowned for its sports watches and chronographs, it introduced their wrist chronograph in 1914.

          Claim To Fame: In 1916, it introduced the Micrograph, the first stopwatch to measure to an accuracy of 1/100th of a second. With watches like the Auto-Graph, which could compute the speed of automobiles and dashboard timers, Tag Heuer became a popular choice among speed sports enthusiasts.

          What's Hot: The 1887 chronograph, the latest in the Carrera collection, with new integrated column-wheel and oscillating pinion, and Grand Carrera Pendulu, the first-ever mechanical movement with a spring derived from magnets, instead of a conventional hairspring.

          TISSOT

It was also the first to make watches out of plastic, mother-of-pearl, wood and stone.             U-BOAT

            Who Are They: The independent company was established in 2000 after founder Italo Fontana discovered his grandfather's watch designs that had been commissioned by the Italian navy in the 1940s. That project never took off, but Fontana cleverly used the designs as inspiration to create this brand.

            Claim To Fame: U-Boat watches can be split into three key collections - Classico, Thousands of Feet and Flightdeck, underlined by a bold, utilitarian look and super-large size.

            What's Hot: The U-1001 titanium diver's watch that is water-resistant to 1,000m and has a pressure escape valve below the crown, which is on the left side of the case.


            ULYSSE NARDIN (you-lees nar-danh)

            Who Are They: Founded in 1846, Ulysse Nardin was run by five generations of the Nardin family until its acquisition by watchmaker Rolf W. Schnyder in 1983.

            Claim To Fame: In 1985, its Astrolabium Galileo Galilel watch from the Trilogy of Time series became the first watch with a feature to locate the position of the sun, moon and stars - it was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records in 1989. The Freak (Watch of the Year 2003), without hands and crown, is one of the most iconic models in horological history as well as for the brand.

            What's Hot: The Circus Minute Repeater, its dial depicting figures in a circus ring that move when the chimes sound, and El Toro perpetual calendar with a second time zone. For women, the Lady Diver Starry Night is a sporty watch with diamonds.


            URWERK (oor-vairk)

            Who Are They: Formed in 1997 by brothers and watchmakers Felix and Thomas Baurngartner, together with Martin Frei, an artist and designer.

            Claim To Fame: In 2003, its Swiss-made, futuristic-looking 103 model with orbiting satellite led to a partnership with Harry Winston on the Opus 5, the fifth in the series of groundbreaking watches.

            What's Hot: The last watches in the brand's UR-103 collection are limited editions. One of them has a dial coloured to look like the Mexican Fireleg tarantula spider

              VACHERON CONSTANTIN (varsh-eron cong-stung-tung)

              Who Are They: Founded in 1755 by Swiss watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron, it is the oldest manufacturer in the world.

              Claim To Fame: In 1955, it produced the Patrimony, one of the thinnest watches in the world with a 1.64mm-deep calibre.

              VIANNEY HALTER (vee-ah-nee al-ter)

              Who Are They: An independent watchmaker, Halter launched his brand in 1994.

              Claim To Fame: Halter's imaginative and outrageous designs, which are produced in limited quantities; collections like the oddly-shaped Antigua, boxy Trio, Goldpfell and Classic.

              What's Hot: The Classic Janvier, which also displays the equation of time and lunar cycle, comes in a limited and numbered series of 12 in platinum.


              VULCAIN

              Who Are They: Founded in 1858 by Swiss watchmaker Maurice Ditisheim, who specialised in complicated watches.

              Claim To Fame: Known as a specialist in mechanical alarm wristwatches, especially for The Cricket Watch launched in 1947. Worn by US President Richard Nixon, it earned the nickname, The President's Watch.
