  • Any advice on NOMOS/ U-Boat?

    Hi All,

a newbie to this forum, hope the bros and sis can give some advice

Going to get my very first "luxury" entry level watch, and currently choosing between a NOMOS and U-Boat. I know they are worlds apart. Anyway I was initially thinking of getting a NOMOS but was recently enchanted by the bold design of U-Boat. However, read a great article here that says one should think if you can live with the watch everyday - I am leaning towards the NOMOS - I can imagine myself wearing it everyday.

    Hence some questions:

    1. Is JW Horology the only place here to get NOMOS? If not, where else?
    2. Any discount from the shop?
    3. Looks like JW only stocks Tangente, though I wouldn't mind the Tangomat and Club... Anyways do you think it is worth it to pay 1k more just for the date?? (i.e. the px difference between a Tangente and a Tangente Date).

    Thanks!!

    Hi,

Not sure why your first luxury watch is between a NOMOS or UBoat - there are alot more brands worth considering as well. But assuming that you have already sorted out that and is now down to these two, I would still suggest you consider Uboat as I think it is the more popular brand between the two. In most SE Asia markets, you can find Uboat boutiques, which is a pretty good indication that they are serious about building the brand. I have a Uboat too and it does attract quite a bit of good attention.

as you have stated both NOMOS and U-boat are very different watch.

NOMOS is leaning towards the dress type of watch. U-boat is leaning towards the more casual type.

NOMOS case size is generally smaller than that of U-boat.

before you take the plunge to buy either one. i would strongly suggest you put on both watches on your wrist to have a look and feel which one you prefer. if you have already done this, wait a week or so and try them on again. this would give you a better 'feel' which one u more likely to buy.

you may email NOMOS direct. alternatively, you may want to try watch buys to see if they willing to ship it here.

as for discount, ask for them. no harm asking if there is. remember to ask if the price is INCLUSIVE of GST or not. there are mixed responses from people who buy from JW claiming yes and no.

Stektan, thanks for reply. Well, started thinking bout watches when I saw a friend wearing a U-Boat, and thought that looked pretty cool. Started researching on watches and came across NOMOS and really liked the understated elegance of the design.
Could you provide more brands for consideration ( < $3k)?
Yeah, U-Boat looks really bold and I will definitely wear it for a night out. But not sure if I will wear it everyday, or if it fits within the cuffs!

Triton, thanks for advice. Will try out both before buying. Thanks.

Personally, i wouldnt pick a watch with a strap as an everyday piece. The hot humid environment in Singapore isnt ideal for that. I have a Nomos Tangente ...

I like the elegant dial and the slim case, it makes for a great dress piece. That said, i wouldnt go so far as to use it as an everyday piece. Its not really practical plus the relatively low WR rating. With a budget of $3K, u should find something in between (neither too dressy nor an outright diver piece). U can find models in this category from Ball, Longines, Tag, etc. I'd suggest u browse around to find something suitable, u dont want to rush into it. Just my 2 cents.

Get a ball aviator dual time zone. Looks classic yet elegant, plus 2 time zones useful if you travel. Or maybe a 2nd hand rolex date. Buy a WOW magazine, they show you the various brands there is in the market and prices for your references. They also tell you where to buy the watches.

Ultimately buy something you think about everyday. When I first bought my Rolex Sub, I look around for 1 month at the various models and brands. I wanted to buy quite a few. But ultimately I found myself thinking of the sub the most, so I bought it. No regrets...

                    Some brands to consider...

Hi, 3K for a new luxury watch is rather limited but if you are willing to consider used (you can find many in the sale forum), you should consider brands like Sinn, Omega, B&R and Beitling. For new, you can look at Fortis, Longines and of course, Ball. But better to stretch your budget to about 5K and consider brands like IWC, Pam and some Rolex (used of course). Good luck in your search! But if NOMOS sings to you, go for it!

Nomos caught my eye too. Elegant. Clean dial. Understated elegance overall. Where can I see one in Singapore?
                      I own a Rolex !

Wow this looks really good!!! I am so sold on the NOMOS. Yes heard that leather straps have to be changed once a year, quite a shame...

Thanks for all the replies, bros. Think Stowa looks pretty elegant in the same style as NOMOS but maybe I am biased the latter still looks nicer

Don't think I want to raise my budget (much) for now... this is a one slippery slope to disaster heh.

Anyway, went to check out U-Boat. Turns out that the Classico costs about $3400 and the FLightdecks $5000 plus. Hmm... probably won't go for it as I wear watches on my right hand and thus the left sided huge screw is a big hindrance. Will check out the NOMOS very soon, it is cheaper and seems more elegant!

Nomos uses Cordovan leather for the straps and its more hardy than most other leather. It also more resistant to those folding marks u get from regular wear. Even so, u wouldnt want to use it as an everyday piece where u constantly get exposed to sweat and water. I'm pretty sure it wouldnt be cheap to replace as well.

For those who like the Nomos dial, the back looks as good as the front too!
