Contemporary artists take Swatch to a new level of CreArt-ivity
TAKE a pop artist from New York, a graphic artist who studied glass blowing as a child and a young French street painter who is among other things, a rapper and hip hop artist.
Add to the mix a noted painter, sculptor and designer of art projects who is also a writer - and the result is a collection of 12 new works for Swatch's ongoing Swatch Artist Collection.
Unveiled last month at a global launch in Venice, Italy, the CreArt Collection features "on the world's smallest canvas" works by Billy the Artist (BTA), Ted Scapa, Matthew Langille and Grems.
These include dynamic black and white high-contrast graphics from BTA in AfterDark, colourful snowboarders in Scapa's Pink Ride and a green monster from Langille's fertile imagination in Germaholic. Plus a red cartoon dancer showing off dance moves in Grem's Show Your Moves.
These and the rest of the collection are available at Swatch's latest concept store at ION Orchard - which features in turn, "Ice Dunes", a retail concept which Ms Pauline Ong, Swatch Singapore's vice-president, describes as "a creative twist to retailing".
This is a modular concept that allows the "scenery" in the shop to be changed to highlight certain watches - such as the limited Vendome collection (only in Paris, Milan and Singapore). Described as "fashion fusion meets avant garde", this features catwalk colours and new materials such as soft steel reflections and chromatic variations in plastic.
The new shop is also the place to see Swatch's foray into high luxury watches - the Diaphane One Turn 2 Her for women (a strictly limited, numbered edition of 50 pieces) and Diaphane One Turn 2 Him for men (a limited and numbered edition of 130 pieces).
These are mechanical "skeleton watches", visible from front and back, and are Swatch's "exclusive expressions of the art of luxury watchmaking". Turn 2 Her ($18,999) features a pink gold bezel with 43 diamonds weighing approximately 1.5 carats and a clear transparent plastic case while Turn 2 Him ($12,599) has a case in transparent black plastic and a bezel in matt and polished white gold.
Only two sets each are available for sale at ION Orchard and the Tourbillon store at Changi Airport Terminal 3 (transit area). Purchase of either model comes with a set of 8 Artist collection watches in an exquisite 10-pieces leather watch box. A CreArt Collection Limited Edition Box Set (only 1,500 worldwide with 15 sets allocated for Singapore) will also be available at Swatch at ION Orchard from mid-August.
