  • Iwc 3705

    Hi,

Would like to get a few opinions on IWC 3705.

The watch is discontinued long time ago. Recently, a friend wanted to sell it to me. Is it worth getting?

I think this is a very old model and comes in smaller case size (i.e. 39mm). Movement is also same as the 3717 which comes in 42mm case size.

Depends on what price point your friend would like to release the watch to you, you can get a Top Gun chrono in ceramic case about S$8K+ now.

Do u mean that the mechanism of 3705 is similar to 3717. The only difference is the ceramic casing.

Hi there, personally i love the classic dial on the older 3706 stainless steel flieger, more than when compared to the newer 3717. The 3717 has a more modern dial imho, where as the 3706 & the 3705 Ceramic have more of a military feel. But you can't go wrong with either.

If i'm not mistaken, i think the 3717 also uses the base Valjoux 7750 reworked to meet IWC's stringent standard & requirements. In addition, as i have small wrists, the 39mm 3706 wears more comfortably. Hence, if i have a chance to get the Ceramic version (3705), i would jump on it. But of course this is my very biased preference. What are yours

I have tried to find some material from the internet to aid you in your decision, but unfortunately there isn't much info on the 3705 ceramic version. Hopefully IWC experts may chime in to assist you.

        IWC 3705 Ceramic Fliegerchrono
        Manufacturer: International Watch Company
        Model: 3705
        Name: Mechanical Flieger Chronograph
Caliber: Caliber 7912 (Base caliber Valjoux 7750)
        Water Resistance: 60 M
        Notes:
        Automatic winding, hacking movement
Movement is 30mm, height of 8.9mm, 25 jewels, 28800 vph
        39 mm case, height 14.6mm
inner case made of antimagnetic soft iron
        Screw-in crown
Convex sapphire glass secured against displacement by drop in air pressure
Approximately 900-1200 of these manufactured in mid-90s
This is the ceramic version of the 3706 stainless steel flieger
Ceramic case made of zirconium oxide (extremely durable, hardness greater than steel) - said to be “..impervious to cuts, dents and scratches”.
According to the IWC catalog (1993?) this high-tech ceramic allowed for Stealth technology to be possible
Caseback, crown and pushers in stainless steel.
Introduced in 1993, production halted in 1997
Rumoured that production stopped because the expenses of manufacturing the case put IWC's retail margins out of line with cost.

Review of the 3706 Flieger - same watch just in steel

Btw, is your friend's watch still for sale? I would highly recommend you getting it.

        Cheers.

If the price is right, the 3705 is certainly worth getting

Yes the movement should be similar if not 100% identical.
