Eric Singer to Test SpringLOCK during Milan Kiss Show on 6/18/2013
This year during Baselworld 2013, BALL CTO. Philippe Antille unveiled the company’s latest innovation, SpringLOCK, a cage-like system that protects a watch movement’s hairspring(1). Mr. Antille explained that the hairspring is the most vulnerable component in a mechanical watch, and the main reason why even high-grade chronometer movements lose accuracy when exposed to mild repetitive shock.
He then enthusiastically described his inspiration for the innovation: a drummer performing a set while wearing a mechanical watch. With SpringLOCK, Philippe sought to create a watch that would retain its accuracy, even as a drummer shook the watch with each beat. SpringLOCK is scheduled to launch installed on three new BALL models(2) later this year. When BALL U.S.A. president Jeffrey Hess heard about the innovation and its inspiration, he immediately thought of the perfect person to help test the technology as it prepares to enter the market: Eric Singer, the drummer of Kiss! Aside from being one of the world's most talented drummers, Eric is an extremely well known watch collector and enthusiast. Many may remember reading about his diverse collection and love of watches in a 2010 issue of Watchtime. Eric also has two BALL Watches in his collection, served as a celebrity judge in a WUS Topper Jewelers Watch Forum contest about BALL Watches, and to top it all off, was even born in Ohio, the birthplace of BALL Watches!(3)
On June 18th, during the Kiss “Monster Tour” performance in Milan, Italy, BALL’s Spring-Lock technology will be put to the test in front of more than 10,000 fans at the Mediolanum Forum. Philippe will get to see his inspiration come to life as Eric drums with several prototypes during the show so that Philippe can assess how SpringLOCK performs under the strain of professional Hard Rock drumming. BALL S.A. Executive Director Kevin Kouch, BALL U.S.A. President Jeff Hess, and I will also be on hand to observe and document the event.
Pictures, interviews with Eric & Philippe, and more to follow over the next few days!
(1) The hairspring is one of the three components of the Balance Complete, the portion of the movement that regulates and provides the watch’s “heartbeat.”
(2) SpringLOCK will debut on three models:
1.The Spacemaster BlackRock- a 42mm Titanium DLC Spacemaster that will feature a chronometer grade ETA 2892-A2, rubber strap, and ceramic bezel.
2. The Spacemaster Airbourne- a Steel case 42mm day-date Spacemaster with a ceramic bezel.
3. The Trainmaster CannonBALL II- a refreshed version of the popular 43mm dress chronograph, chosen for SpringLOCK to show that this feature can eventually be used
in all of BALL's products.
(3) BALL Watch founder Webb C. Ball’s watch store was in Cleveland, and would later become the BALL Watch Company.
