  • A thread for all 'faults'

    Hi,

This idea came across my mind recently over some conversations I had with some watch aficionados. I'm not sure how feasible this is or not but I am wondering if we can have a thread (may be few) that compiles all types of faults/problems with watches that we own/come across. Some faults/problems may be common among some watch models. It will also be good to compile those repairs that are made to the faults/problems listed.

For example, let's use Sinn U1. One common problem I read is the double layers of anti-reflective (AR) coats on both sides of the glass, that visible scratches seem almost inevitable no matter how one uses the watch. One solution to this is to remove one layer or even both layers of the coats. So may be under the thread title "Common Watch Problems", we can have this information shared.

If a thread of this nature is troublesome to create as a stand-alone, we can consider to create some kinda' folder(s) in the existing "Other Brands". This is also only workable if everyone is willing to share those faults/problems and the type of rectification(s)/solution(s) of their watches.

This idea is not to run down any particular watch brand/model but merely for sharing of knowledge and allowing those who wish to buy any watch to understand what the pros/cons may be.

    What do you think?

      Great idea from our SM

I suggest members share their own experience not hearsay. It would be more valuable that way rather than to have a consolidation of rumors.

It did come across my mind that some information may deter people from buying certain watch(es) but having experienced this myself, I think not. It is good that people can have the correct information for them to decide if they really want certain watch(es). I don't think the deterring effect is great enough if one has made up his/her mind on a particular piece or yearn for one for a long time. Well, I still bought myself a Sinn U1 after all

Same problem in Omega Planet Ocean with 2500 movement. Dunno they still do the same on the recent 8500 movement or not.

Own experience not hearsay.. Hee hee....

Its definitely a good idea Ocean but TS is encouraged to also give a solution or provide details of how he solved the issue.

This is what I imagine the admin would say...

Where to find an expert that knows products of all brands? We are talking about product specific issues not general technical knowledge of watches.

When you say "we can invite...", are you going to share the cost? (this one definitely sounds like admin doesn't it?)

Yes bro Pegasi that was what went through my head when I wrote the above and sort of imagine that ...If we setup this thread, I would recommend it to be split by brands .The potential possibilities to get this rolling that I can think of is but I understand for ball watches there is a rep from Ball that is a member of this forum, who post about roads shows from time to time. maybe he can help connect us.. but this is just a thought as gullible as it may sound...

l also see under the rolex threads from time to time, there are a few member experts here and there who are able to answer the questions like bracelet issues and authentication type questions... this can be bundle under this thread so it is more useful to search...

Open to suggestions to get this rolling as this will help us all with the learning journey here

Yes we need all kind of ideas

A brand representative is a good idea but whether or not such representative will stay very open and objective in discussing its product issues is a big question.

The spirit of a forum is to share experience voluntarily, hence any free expert advicer the forum can get would be great. Issue is most people who are still on the job do not want to reveal their true identity or occupation that may link to their true identity.

Maybe there are already some experts in this forum...;-)

sharing information is fine. there is a fine line when one uses 'common watch problem', certain word will give different interpretation to different people. the issue is, is it a really a problem or is it design flaw or otherwise.

it is noted that for zenith, it was 2 different models and both had a common issue, service centre not able to service the watch.

it is noted for sinn, one is a pvd coating issue while the other is the lume marker falling off. it is alleged that it is a common problem but was not verified.

there is a fine line where we as watch lovers voice our unhappiness over a watch and another issue when we start to 'accuse' watch manufacturer about certain issues.

however, there is going to be so many brands and different models, how is it best to consolidate? to go by brand and then type?

where do we say it is wear and tear, is it what is termed wear and tear by manufacturer?

for wolfeyes' zenith, was it a case of the watch being a lemon or otherwise? for hounds was the watch a lemon or was it a case of watch technician incompetence?

when we do classify the issue as a fault? when there is more than 5 watches of a particular brand and model?

if it is like double coating, it is a fault or otherwise?

I think no need to classify or define the type of problems/issues.

Can name the thread/sub forum as "Feedback on XXX(brand name) watches", or "Issue with XXX watches", or something like that. Very vague, won't get into trouble.

Of course, as usual, every member is responsible for what he or she says in the forum. I believe the forum already have a disclaimer to protect itself.

No need to make it so confusing

                          Com'on guys,

Don't we already have such threads (sticky) in some of the folders? That we share information on watch verifications, buying of watches from second-hand dealers, etc? Whether certain information is a fact or 'myth' should be left to the readers to decide/filter. When you read sales references of a member in the iTrader threads, do you want to take in everything that were written? Is positive really positive; negative really negative? Only when you encounter it yourself and go thru' the experience that you will realise what it is really like right?

But at least with some basic information, one can then probe/enquire further to start making informed choices. There is no need to get any expert advice. And I believe people complain for a reason and not for the fun of it. Just frank and honest views on what your experience is on an item that you are owning/using. It can be short, sweet and brief or long and detailed. Up to you. It's like reading a review but only that this 'reviews' can be easily located in the forum.

                          Thank you for sharing

If creating a stand-alone thread/section for this is not feasible, may be can consider to capitalise on the 'Other Watches' thread to try it out. Don't we already have individual threads for Ball, Breitling, IWC, JLC, Omega, Panerai, Sinn, Tag Heuer, Japanese Brands"? For example under 'Panerai', we can have a "Watch Issues" thread and collate all these problems/issues of any PAM models in it. So if some one intends to buy say a PAM233 and wants to know if there is any common fault/problem with this watch model, he/she can go into the thread to read up. Same goes for the other watch brands.
