Seeing that some of us are travelling. Lets share tips on how to travel light/safe/cheap/etc.
Light
carry enough clothing to get you to your destination (ie. pants x2, shirt x3, socks x2, tie x1, undergarmet x2)
pocket sized toiletries; used toothbrush (throw away upon returning)
ditch the towel if staying at hotels. Otherwise take a old one too.
Safe
no fancy electronics, watches, etc. Keep the gold chain and misc jewellery at home.
two different wallets one with no money the other with majority of money.
Have CC and cash seperate
Leave about S$500 in local currency in your coin pockets for emergency
ask for a receipt before leaving the store so tht you have proof of purchase
Cheap
use a backpack rather than suitcase. You are able to travel on public transport rather than taxi
try and gasp the local language - so you dont look like a total tourist
eat where locals eat
in extreme cases - stay at backpackers hostel or "brothels". works to be much cheaper if travelling on budget.
sleeping in subway is the last alternative
in europe, travel on night train. You can sleep in train and get to your destination fresh and revived.
buy any foreigner ticktets at home (europass, japan rail pass, etc)
