I think in terms of the luxury level definitely rolex isn't perceived to be as high as Patek or IWC. But in terms of value for money and quality, reliability and history of the brand, I think rolex is one of the best. Even Gurus would recommend rolex as the top brands to get.
If I could quote Tom Blot ( The watch guru, http://www.watchguru.com/ ) "Listen to my advice, stick with Patek or Rolex."I hope I don't get struck by lightning. - Barbarella

erh, my comment is buy what you like and affordable. Many people have different perception on different things, so can't blame them as views are pretty much shaped individual that is greatly affected by their surrounding environment.Current Collection :

Simply, enjoy what you've bought and don't bother with such. No point getting offended to as to most of them, that is just the way they talk, esp amongst the taitai crowd. Their idea is to always get the best from their hubbies as they always think the hubby is likely to spend more money/time on his hobbies and such.
With regards to the particular demographic of rich lads in question, more often than not , they don't know much about watches and are either following their fancies or their friends. Nothing much wrong with that but usually when you counter them with proper history and perception of a brand which they initially scorn , you'll be surprised at the reception you may get.

havent you heard, when you talk to humans, use human language, when you talk to ghost, speak their ghost language...
i was brought up to avoid associating with the rich and mum always reminded me that compare to the rich, we are super poor, compare to poor, we are much better off....
whats more important is that we work a honest living and spend within our limits, who cares what other people say, own pocket got enough to spend more important...than "your 1 carat very small...why dun buy bigger"
since we are on the topic of richie rich, i used to hate that character/cartoon when i was growing up...naturally i wont have good impression if they are show offs with zero substance....

when i was young, almost every single adult like to compare me and so-so. then compare this and that. from academic to financial status to whatever that can be compared. they like to compare, last time your results like that, how come now like that, you see your cousin results, last time like that, now like that. went on for years. in fact till now.
then they like to say you see now he stay here then moving on to stay there. so successful. this and that. now, i managed to have the same academic level as him. but i have done slightly better than my cousin. now they say, woah you so smart. how you manage to do it ah? wah piang. after so many years still want to compare. i told them, i did it because i want to self improve. i want to lay foundation for future.
usually, i tell most people. you will get to your destination eventually. just that each of us has a different path to take. some paths are obstacles free, some are not. enjoy your journey. it is during this journey you learn and gain experience. some good, some bad. take it as it comes along. someone said, what can't defeat you makes you stronger.
to me, there is no need to compare. they are endless. it just makes your life harder. what i do is set achievable targets. once you get there, you will be contented. collecting watch, buying watch is a journey full of experience. you meet nice people and not so nice people. you get good deals and no good deals.
enjoy the journey. what is status? it is a mere form of comparison. dont get suck into it and make your life miserable.if you have issues with your account, click here for self help and read forum rules here. 90% of your answers can be found in Forum FAQ
