  • Should a feedback be challenged or debated?

Once in a while, when I run out of nonsense, I will write something serious.

What I experience and read in the feedback forum prompts me to think and to write about this topic. By feedback, I don’t mean newbie’s questions on why cannot do this or that, but improvement suggestions or simply ideas to make the forum a more interesting place.

To start with - any rubbish thread in the kopi-talk forum can easily attract more participation than a feedback thread. It is not difficult to understand. Generally people are afraid of giving suggestion publicly in case it makes them look stupid when their idea is being challenged or refuted. And it does take effort to give a suggestion.

So, how to encourage feedback or participation in feedback forum? (I conveniently assume sg-roc welcome feedback since there is a dedicated sub forum)

Should a feedback be challenged? The experts say no, because no feedback is a bad feedback, however negative it may sound. There is however a grey area between feedback and criticism, and between a feedback session and a discussion session. Obviously, a discussion session is meant for discussion, while feedback is a message to the receiver who has the choice to accept/react or not. A person/party who invites and receives feedback does not need to prove the feedback is wrong in order not to accept it.

A good feedback session requires the right approach from both the person giving feedback and the person receiving feedback. I knew that long ago but am still learning the trick, so this is a reminder for myself. No wonder someone said, “Knowing is not doing”.

I fully understand that very often a feedback in term of a suggestion requires clarification. But to challenge or debate over a feedback? Or perhaps sharing of ideas or suggestions that require discussion should not be classified as feedback but something else?

Share your view if you bother to, but with an open mind, please.

Yr thread too long lah. My feedback is to start a separate forum for long thread. Just kidding hehe.
Feedback should be discuss but not to the extend of challenge or debate unless the feedback/input provided is controversial. We know sometime some ppl might give wrong info, unintentionally is ok (I am guilty of that) but some jus bullshxt!
So a discussion is good in certain sense, especially against scammer!

I find that seeking feedback is good. Feedback is two way communication. More often than not, suggestion given is not constructive. Simply put, there is no point providing feedback if feedback is not feasible. Feedback provider usually see from their own angle, feedback receiver see it from their own angle.

I have been guilty many times of reading what my eyes want me to read, this means I am not reading what it is. I have read your feedback on your suggestion which give prize for articles. This suggestion is good for both members and the forum. To offer a reward is to entice member to participate and contribute. You were ask to provide examples what constitutes a good write up, which you fail to provide example. Would the situation been different if you were able to provide at least an example? Giving a suggestion without giving solution can be viewed as trouble maker. On the other hand, another member provided some examples like 5000 points for $5. The suggestion is given with a possible solution. But is this solution workable or not depends on feedback receiver. This would at least give the feedback receiver something to work on.

I give suggestions and possible solutions for my area of work to my boss. My boss will evaluate my suggestions and solutions. If workable it is enforce, if not it is gone with the wind. As you said it, with open mind. I see some members are trying to destroy the forum and I strongly urge the relevant authorities to take these members to tasks. Why let these trouble makers stay in this forum and undo the hard work all other members since day one to make the forum what it is. The forum needs members, the members need the forum but not these trouble maker members. If other watch forum can ban members as they deem fit without reason, why can't this forum. Sometimes diplomatic is not a solution.

Thank you for your comments. Obviously you have a different view of what a feedback is. This thread is open to all views and opinions.

I think asking members to provide feedback in term of a full solution and then comment why some parts wouldn't work is a little bit too much to ask for. Even my boss at work wouldn't do that. Again, it is a different expectation of idea vs solution.

            The key word is feedback.

When one is paid to provide a solution at work, it's a different matter.

My keywords - CONSTRUCTIVE feedback. It is not constructive then no point giving. Better keep quiet. So since here you are not paid to give feedback, then why give? IF you truly want to forum to be better, then it is better to give constructive feedback like other members. At least I built on your idea. If the boss don't want to listen, also no choice.

I will exit this discussion and I mean what I say not like someone.

                  You are most welcome.

My ambition is that this thread can raise some awareness that leads to more constructive/productive discussions in a more friendly environment, where improvement suggestions are concerned.

Again thanks for your comments. I wouldn't argue since it defeats the purpose of this thread, and it wouldn't be fair since you have said you would exit this discussion.

Its very subjective to each and every individual. Mentally, we all have our own perspective the moment we read those feedback.
Whether or not some jokers will refute and challenge...person's giving feedback can always ignore...imho

                            ahh.. interesting discussion

This is a public forum (unless I am mistaken) and everyone should be welcomed to say what he want to say. Thats how we all learn and thats the intent of posting here... we want to hear from everyone who has an opinion. Just need to ask everyone to be more tolerant of fellow posters.

If you really want to limit who can respond then perhaps you should put in the header (if this is where we want to go)

something like "Noobs need not reply" or "Only Expert responses welcomed" then perhaps you will not see many responses and might just succeed in killing the forum.

                            just my tuppence worth...
