I have also have a small wrist so 40 +/-2 too. Thickness can also be an issue

I dunno if anyone noticed this or if it's just me. The case diameter/ size is just one factor. It's really the sum of its parts.
1) the case color/ material plays an important part. If it's a pvd or dlc model, 42mm will look smaller than a ss 42mm of e same model due to optical illusion. So, if it's a pvd/ dlc case, preferably at least 44mm.
2) if the bezel is thick, the dial dial will look a bit small thus making the watch look small. E.g. The Steinhart ocean 44. Or the ennebi bronzo.
3) a bracelet variant of the same size generally looks bigger than one fitted with straps or rubber.I don't have enuf watches but I will stop buying now!
