  • Allocation of Assets

    Hi All Brothers and Sisters,

How would you allocate your assets (including CPF savings), among housing, car, family, investment and savings (2nd, 3rd, 4th properties in this class), WATCHES, and other hobbies (some examples are sound systems, cameras, a few cars, women, men, wine)

Personally I feel the ideal allocation for working class is:
30% Housing (assuming 30% each from you and your spouse), 20% Car, 30% Family, 10% Investment and Savings, 10% on our beloved Watches and other hobbies.

    What do you think?

MR B Fund manager ah? my thoughts is I will never put 20% on car... I would think the allocation should be like this
30% Housing (assuming 30% each from you and your spouse),
        10% Car,
        30% Family,
        25% Investment and Savings,
5% on our beloved Watches and other hobbies.

generally speaking, here's kind of my breakdown (monthly):

housing - 0% now. fully paid up. if i get a 2nd property, then 30% from my total CPF contribution + 20% cash from my monthly salary
family - 25% (kid's eduaton fund, joint a/c and give allowance to mum)
              entertainment (wine & dine; friends & family) - 10%
              insurance - 6%
              income tax - 7%
              watches - 12%
My personal expenses (makan + public transport + personal gym training/i call it a "prevent from growing fatter/health investment") - 10%. No car ownership
              Personal savings - 30%

Dear AC_Wong, I'm not a fund manager, nor a financial planner so do not fret that I might bill you. Haha..

I must say your ideal allocation is very prudent.
Assuming a working class in his mid 30s put aside average $2,000 per month into his Assets for past 10 years, he would probably has $240,000.
At 10% allocation, is barely $24,000 downpayment on car and 10% of salary goes to monthly payment ($700) would probably only get him a 7yr-old Kia.
And today, the average car we see on the road is a bmw or mercs. There is a lot of high-earners around.

Dear LSL, Wolfeyes, Rolex116613, Thank you for sharing your valuable input. I must say they are very sound allocations. The conclusion I get is all of you allocate about 10% on watches, which is my eventual target.

And Mr. Wolfeyes, on a side note, how much does a personal gym trainer cost? Do you get those that go to your condo's gym or one at a fitness club? I'm getting old and not getting much exercise from my daily work, guess I should hire one too.

Dear Eastsider, I believe with the advancement in medication, most of us will have at least 20 golden years after retirement.
My little advise is to start planning it once the house-loan is almost cleared.
I have seen a friend who whack most of his income on watches, women, and cars once he pay off his housing loan, instead on making retirement plans.
