In which area of Singapore did you spend your childhood?

Some say people who collect stuff such as vintage watches/toys/whatever tend to remember their early days better.

I spent my entire childhood and teenage in Sembawang - the old Sembawang, to be exact. I have lived in few differnt part/kampong of Sembawang, and till date I can still clearly remember and visualize many of the streets and places that no longer exist due to resettlement.

My primary school and the carts outside the school selling snacks/tidbits/small little toys and "di gam", my favourite cinema, coffee shops operated by Hainanese, laksa stall, fried noodle stall, fruit stall, places where i played football, and the small public pool @ the old Amiralty Road where I learned my swimming, are part of my memory.

When I was young the MP of Sembawang was the now President Tony Tan, who was also the minister of education during some period.

I still keep in touch with some of my primary school's friends, but lost contact with all the old neighbours and childhood mates. Could any of them be among the SG-ROC members...?

Chinese rojak was served on a leaf.

Street Chinese Wayang popular at Onan Road... No KTV at Joo Chiat...
Wanton Mee seller on a tricycle (mobile stall) was selling at $1.50 that time.
Indian man with small bag goes house-to-house to cut hair...
Chinese apek goes house-to-house repairing pots and pans, using charcoal stove to heat his soldering iron...
Malay satay man carried his stall on a bamboo pole going to every street.
Gulam Mohd (ex-S'pore footballer) stayed across my grandparents home at that time...

Remember the kok kok mee Ah Eng's WTM & Ah Seng was his assistant ..I live a stone's throw away at Branksome rd..eat regularly at the duck mee stall in front of the present Dunman food ctr..Red house was my go to place for birthday cakes..

Born in jalan eunos...grew up and spent my childhood and teenage years in Potong pasir.
moved out of potong pasir only after i got married but still visits potong pasir as my parents still lives there.

1983 was the year my family relocate there, lotsa changes in potong pasir from the MPs , playgrounds , the canal and during my school days there was a time that they decided to terminate Bus 147 from operating in potong pasir. It was the only bus that stops directly infront of my primary school in victoria street..majority of the residents impacted by the news. Actually there was a small bus interchange in potong pasir back then which only for bus 147 service.

it was a small neighourhood but grew up there was happening!
still in touch with my childhoods friend most of them are married and relocate to other estate
but like me they still visits potong pasir as their parents still lives there.

Seems like most people do not move far away from their "root", due to the connection with parents and siblings who are still living at or nearby the old place, and also owning to the sense of attachment to the place where they are familar with.

In my case it was very sad that the entire village where I lived as well as most part of the old Sembawang have been pulled down/wiped out for new development. Many people including most of my siblings have since been relocated to Yishun New Town. The Sembawang New Town was only built after the near completion of Yishun New Town.

One thing that bothers me, is that the authority tries to "preserve" history by using the name of a old place on a new place, effectively relocating a "historical place" and blur the history/our memory. For example, the famous Chong Pang village in the old Sembawang, is now a certain area within the Yishun New Town. Sigh.

stayed at kampong near Teck Whye... studied at a primary school near 10 Mile Junction (now junction 10). Used to take short cut to and fro, catch freshwater prawns at this big longkang called Pang Sua Canal. anyone know the place or not?

I grew up in what people commonly refer to as 白桥 which was near Kk hospital and then moved to Hougang. Just reading this thread brought up lots of memories as I just lost my dad last year. V painful to think of the past sometimes

I am sorry to learn that, but I am sure there are a lot of good memories as well.

Pek Kio hawker center is one of my favorite place for lunch when my office was at Thomson Road.

alarm clock @ 530am is the ice making shop on the ground floor opposite my block.

there are many food stalls along the singapore river and nearby. the nan hwa chang (ah chiu) fish head steamboat used to be near my place.

boats used to carry goods and unload by the singapore river where all the warehouse are.

used to swim in singapore river. jumping off those boats. yeah. it was really dirty back then. compared to the reef clean up @ st john island, only difference is that there is no oil floating on the water.

i have moved to east side now, onan road, red house are part of my teenage years.

and yes, ah seng and ah eng are still selling wan tan mee.

the popiah skin shop is still around. but the flavour is no longer there

onan road area is now.......getting so crowded. 10 house bought over. 1 small development project comes up. 10 families becomes 30 families.

soon it will be 6.9 million people. i can no longer see anything clear 3 blocks from me. trees are cut, concrete fills its place.

the price we pay for destroying our environment. use to be hot weather during CNY, now? raining almost every other day.

was in potong pasir a few mths ago and it was like travelling back in a time travel machine to the 1980s.

the HDB flats there are just soooo old.

but my friend who lives there says that she likes potong pasir and that the aged flats and ancient lifts gives the neighbourhood character

Attended Primary school at Lee Kuo Chuan School (Now Old folks home). After school go play at drain near Police Academy and eat Ice Kachang at Old Whitley hawker centre under the bridge of PIE!

Whitley hawker centre! Our hang out place after every football match (I went to Thomson Sec Sch, now the SJI International). The sugar cane juice was our must-have. Back then sugar cane juice stall wasn't everywhere like today. Now there are some futsal courts there.

And the old folks home...Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home...my mom spent her last one month or so there after she got a stroke and went into coma. Very sad memory...
