When buying or collecting watches, what is your priority? Is it buying because of the movements or just because it is more branded? Eg. Zenith and JLC are renowned for their movements as compared to Panerai and AP, what is your take? I personally found Zenith and JLC have great and outstanding movements, heritage and history too.

Personally I look at brand and design in that order. I am not too concerned movement wise, be it in house or non in house movements, etc. I must like the feel of the watch on my wrist. Regardless of how good a movement is, if I do not like the design then I will not even consider buying it.Check out my Amateur Watch Blog @ http://parte-di-tempo.blogspot.sg/

Good movement is important to me! I think there is 2 types of prestige here. First prestige is among the public where brand and fashion design is important. Second type of prestige is among the WIS where your watch is recognize for its horological significance. Second type of prestige appeals to me more.

I think value wise(not in term of monetary) I will still go with reliable n good movement, I used to have a watch(FM)but in ETA movement, in the end I sold it away for a better one.. For sure some designs are very appealing, but the thought of going to spent so much on a brand on an ETA movement, still think not worth it. So best is to get one with great in house movement and is branded, haha...

In the order of priority
1) Brand- Cost that determines how much we need to pay and how well it will fare in the second hand market
2) Movement- The history, technology and prestige..."He could not just wear a watch. It had to be a Rolex." Ian Fleming, Casino Royale (1953)

Movements a priority to me.
Then follows by brands.
In the past, more than 20yrs back, brands means quality. But at this era, movements means quality, brands means... how much sales or popularity through their effort put on advertising means reliability to general consumers.

brand for me but it also depend on how much i'm willing to pay for the movement under the hood.
In the past I can pay 3K+ for a 2824 model but as one learns along the way, you also learn more about watches
not that I'm not willing to pay this amount for a 2824 now but I will consider a fair bit more than last time.

I buy the watch that speaks to me the most. The legacy of the watch must either come in the case design or movement or both. Like for example the Tudor Black Bay, the case design is a legacy passed down from the many successful Tudor subs that has outfitted many navies whereas it is powered by a usual but reliable ETA movement.
In these days, it is hard to find watches that has both and it is usually with the traditional big boys like VC or PP or AP or Rolex or IWC etc.
