Movements or Brand?

Other considerations include: resale value, and maintenance cost.

I'll look at the brand AND the model... and consider the movement when there's another watch competing for my attention and I'm trying to decide between the two. Should they both be in the same price range and have a similar mental score in my head in terms of desirability, it's the movement that often sways it for me.

all conditions are the same - brand new:

for the same price, 2013 annual calendar from rolex and PP (latest models), which one would you pick?

for the same price, seiko tuna and rolex sea dweller (not deep sea), which one would you pick?

for the same price, jlc master thin and rolex datejust, which one would you pick?

if rolex datejust and rolex sub date were both sold for the same price, which would you pick?

and finally, rolex day date (18238) and rolex daytona (zenith steel) sold for the same price, which one would you pick?

Local wise is more on brand. For me movement is important in a watch.

Brand - tells a watch heritage
Movement - tells how much the company put in effort into the watch
Watch design/casing - same as movement

Given all things equal (i.e. design, pricing, functions, etc...), i would consider the branding 1st followed by its movement in that order.

For me, it's movement, design followed by brand.

The watch might be aesthetically attractive but if the movement is a quartz or not a reliable or easy to service movement (unless it's a reliable in-house movement), I'll not even bother.

It is a chicken and egg kinda argument. A good brand usually (not always the case though) comes with good movement, and a good (not always the case though) movement is usually fixed to a good brand watch. Hence, the rest of the factors come into play, like the heritage and design of the watch. Some will argue that paying top dollar for a luxe watch, one should also enjoy the asthetic part of it. Heritage? Important too...

So at the end of the day, it boils down to every individuals pref and liking. No right nor wrong...
