Recent 2 SAF deaths - Views from pre-NSF, NSF, active NS men to MR guys?

There were 2 recent SAF deaths. Ng Eng Heng got quite a bit of Parliament airtime fending off the MPs' rockets.

The press and social media are also hot on MINDEF's heels.

What do you folks think? Pre-NSF, NSF, active NS men and MR guys.... time to hear your views, and your training stories.

Accidents happen. It cannot be helped. As long as rigorous activities are taking place involving exposives and heavy equipment, accidents will happen no matter what kind of safety regulations are in place.

One of the mother's behaviour is a bit overboard. Where got such thing as her second son should not serve just because she lost one son? She is not the first and sure as hell won't be the last.

Agree with bro 116613, my sympathy goes to all parents who lose their kids through training incidents.

Share one experience ah... during my NSF days, on a live firing exercise, the sky started to pour down. Got lightning, got thunder. Whole body wet, underwear wet, socks wet, every darn thing also wet, darn sian. Then exercise halted lor.. trainers bo pian mah. Loads of lightning.

Whole platoon ley, it was platoon live firing. That day, if heng heng lightning struck on those trees, then bye bye liao. Where got TSR man those dayz.

The problems are young commanders do not understand the risks. They just cheong and want to show that they are the best. I was guilty of such actions too until as I get older, I realised my responsibilities are heavy, esp during ICT. I get worried when I was assigned to be conducting or safety officer. Thanks god MR already.

Bro Tyongchi, in NSF days, the trainers and commanders are only 1 - 2 years older than trainees lor.....
When we were age 19, we thought we were the most matured folks in the whole universe. lol.

Actually, I used to train with quite a no. of smoke grenades being activated at one time ley. Cannot remember that there is this TSR/ training plan that says only up to max of 2 smoke grenades at one go only ley. Not even for FIBUA. I could be wrong.

This captain threw six at one go siah. Maybe alot of people before him including him threw 6 at one go, but nothing happened.

Social media gives peole more power to speak up and create more awreness.Not sure if all bros feel
it but such incidents used to kept secret. There were no news coverage on the official channels never debated in the parliament
Think the important thing is that there is better awareness amongst the NSF what not to do
Hopefully not to make the same mistake. Condolences to the families who lost their sons.

My cousin died many years ago in the army...he's an officer just passed OCS. He's shot by a recruit during a live firing exercise and then the recruit shot himself on the spot. His younger brother was then posted to an admin post when he was enlisted.

Jus my 2 cents worth... i feel that everything should be fair... how about asking the ministers and MPs' sons aka white horses to go through NS like the rest of us (or at least me)

I agree training should be tough and as realistic as possible.. but we are not fighting a war here... I believe safety should come first and that's wat they preach rite... their remaining sons should be excused from NS in my opinion

these are two separate incidents and i don't think it's fair to clump them together.

i think the jeep incident was during scout/recon training. no comment as i'm not a scout but what i saw when i was at SMI was a bit of recklessness all round - nothing out of the ordinary for the place. land rovers were not the only vehicles being driven/ridden without licenses.

as for the allergic reaction to the zinc chloride... there is no guarantee that with 2 smoke grenades he would have been okay... i'm sure that officer was not the first one to throw more than 2 but unfortunately he's the first one to get in trouble for it.

many moons ago, i was in BMTC and OCS white horse cohort (my coy and wing have WH minister son and more than a few kids from rich families) and if the time line is correct, it was probably the last year such tags were used.

treatment seemed better in hindsight (when we were swapping stories much later with same intake guys not from Scorpion/Leopard and Delta). i didn't go through pro-term with any WH but training did not seem any easier in our first few months.
