  • Claiming GST - Hypothetical question

    Hi all,

Need your collective opinion. Hypothetically, if I am a Singaporean that lives overseas almost permanently yet still on a SGP passport, is there any possibility of claiming back the 7.5% GST on major purchases? Say when one buys a watch? It is a fair chunk of change.....

    Just out of curiosity.

If too sensitive, do PM me. Thanks.

if u hold a SGP passport. there is no way you can claim the GST even if you spend most of the time overseas.

    btw, 7.5%?

I reckon that one way to work around the system is to buy at the airport, only on your way OUT of Singapore, for Singaporeans or otherwise. there's no GST then, so in theory it works.

But usually the discounts are not great, so in the end, you may not have any savings.

correct. also the port of departure must be from changi/selatar airport or passenger sea-port (which i believe is located in harborfront?!?).

                  Hi all,

                  Thanks for the responses.

And yes when I was still in SGP, I was with AROC Singapore and AROC Malaysia driving first the Alfasud 1.3 (lovely car!!) and later the 145. Realised now I shouldn't have scrapped the 'Sud.....
