  • noob questions, please bear with me...

Hi guys, I'm very new to watch trading, in fact, I havent done a trade before. Have spent a few days looking at the various forums and sale posts as well as the websites of some secondhand shops. I have a few questions and hope that the more experienced bros and sis here can help me learn:

    1. In trade/sell posts I often see "verification at rsc'. What does this mean? bring to rsc to verify what? that the watch is authentic? would that cost 107? or is there any other things being tested?
    2. Is it a no-no to buy from shops/websites? I've seen on some websites (like the ones advertised in this forum) that sell brand new watch at lower than market price. If they're really brand new, why is there a reduction in its value (i.e. why would they want to sell it for less)?
    3. If you're unlucky and bought a watch with a lemon movement, can it be repaired at rsc till its working well? or gone case means gone case alr.
    4. Does the value of a preown watch depend on how many times the owner change, or it's just dependent on the age/condition entirely?

    Thanks in advance!

Verification @ Rolex Service Centre (RSC) means that if buyer wants to have a peace of mind that the rolex watch is genuine, the buyer can proceed to RSC to get it verified by the technician. $107 refers to the verification cost. no other things are being tested other than the watch is genuine.

buyers are free to buy from shops or websites on their own. the reason why these brand new watches is possibly due to that the watch is from other countries other than singapore. some of the sellers can get better pricing than local shops.

if you bought the watch that comes with a lemon movement from a AD, you can proceed to the local AD to seek assistance. however, if you buy outside local AD, you are basically on your own meaning you need to go to RSC on your own. if the watch is under warranty, it can be fixed @ no cost to you.

the price of preown watches is dependent on various factors such as demand and supply of the model, the condition of watch, the completeness of the watch package (warranty card, green tag, red tag, etc), and many other reasons.

some in this forum has feedback, for $107, one of the 'free gift' they provide, after verification, are scratches on your watch
of course there is always the usual cloth and pouch and receipt

So how does the process of verification when buying a watch from a third party go? Is it like the buyer and the seller for to rsc together, then verify on the spot, or how else?

usually both buyers and sellers meet @ RSC for verification. previously, depending on the number of people requiring service, the waiting time is usually up to 1 hour. however, now, it is not possible to get it done within an hour. RSC will advise you to come back tomorrow or later. this has given rise to some issues.

RSC will usually contact the person who sends in the watch. if seller sends in the watch and buyer back out, then seller will waste time and effort and more importantly, have the watch open unnecessarily. if buyer sends in the watch, then the watch turns out to be non genuine, then buyer is @ losing end because seller will not hand over the watch to buyer without full payment of watch.

as such, these days both parties may turn to independent authorizing parties.

however, i personally prefer to approach RSC given that the watch serial number matches that of serial card. i would practise due homework check on seller, the AD stamp on the warranty card that can be found on rolex website and other form of checks. there are many ways that one can ask seller for checks. i will not disclose what other forms of check as these form of checks once revealed can be masked by unscrupulous sellers.

i would then hand over the money to seller and inform seller that i will authenticate the watch @ RSC and will seek assurance that seller will refund if the watch is not genuine.
