  • Essential watches

Hi guys, I was reading a magazine which insists that any men should have 3 watches at least: a daily beater, a dive watch and a dress watch. Seriously what's considered a dress watch? I surely can't afford anything from the Holy Trinity so what can be considered as a decent dress watch.

By the way, the article condemns Pams and Rolexes.

just curious what magazine is it? Curious to go have a look at how and why they condemn Pam and Rolexes...haha

My dress watch is my Rolex DSSD...... not much of a magazine to condemn Rolex

PAMS only good if manufacture mvm'ts otherwise frankly are way over priced... imo
      ROLEX.

For me.....its all Rolexes. A 16800 for my daily beater, a 1665 for a diver watch.....and a simple black dial 6694 as a dress watch. i see nothing wrong with that combo. P.

              I think the appropriate 3 categories should be - daily beater, chronograph and dress watch. Within each category, looking at only luxury watches, you can also classify into 3 price range - value (less than 10k), premium (10-20k) and super premium (above 20k). my pick for the category would be;

Daily beater - rolex sub, AP royal oak, Patek nautilus
Chronograph - omega speedmaster, rolex Daytona, AP offshore
Dress - IWC portofino, JLC master control, Lange Saxonia/Patek calatrava

              Just my thoughts...

my definition of dress watch is a watch that looks great in formal wear but out of place in casual wear (not smart casual ah)
                    - Lange, Rolex DJ, IWC Portuguese, Grand Seiko kind of watch etc

some watches are versatile, a combination of dressy, sporty and casual. fits most occasions and thus can qualify as a "beater" or tool watch.
                    - Rolex Sport, Pams, Ball EH, most Seikos except Tuna kind of watch etc

some watches are plain fashion, "luxury" in label and creative in design. for dress down days or people who wear smart casual to work. great for upstarts (IMO only, don't flame me)
                    - B&R, U Boat, Gucci kind of watches

                    dive watch, self explanatory.

i agree that a man should have a beater and a dress watch... but a dive watch? for what?

oh you're talking about watch snob. He actually does give pretty good advice, abeit in a very arrogant manner. His dislike for Panerais are well known and not without merit completely but with Pam's coming up with its own movements, he has actually softened and even recommended a Pam in one of the writeups.

IMO. A dress watch should have a very clean dial with simply date and time. It could be an iconic model. For instance, AP 15300, PP Calatrava 5127 or even Rolex Submariner. It all depends on each individual's preferance. No hard rules.
