  • i heard a familiar phrase ..............

some of you may have heard me saying this before, i have walk a full circle, now i am back to rolex.

i started appreciating rolex watches, then along the way, i venture out to other brands like seiko, dievas and most recently helson. however, i found myself back where i started, appreciating rolex watches again.

i was at watch and whisky event last night, i was chatting with this gentleman who is a watch enthusiast and was discussing about many things. then can the usual pleasantries, exchange name, name cards, what you do, etc. this gentleman happens to be a moderator from another watch forum. so naturally the conversation continued in watches and so on.

one sentence that he said caught my attention, he mentioned that he heard several watch enthusiasts mentioned that they have walk a full circle and they are back into appreciating rolex. i replied, that i certainly most agree.

i started appreciating 1501 which my dad has one over the past 30 odd years, been into RSC 3 times for full overhaul each costing more than 2k. why pay this amount when the amount is similar to the buying cost?

then i went into appreciating modern sports pieces, the 16570. 16710. 16520......after which it seems that the passion for rolex is declining and i went out looking @ other brands. after spending 4 years in the wilderness, i came back to rolex looking @ the vintage pieces.

i have walked a full circle, now i am back with rolex. an evergreen brand that caters for everyone.

I haven't walk a full circle. But I never "leave" Rolex, so "come back to Rolex" does not apply to me.

Agree with Triton....but if you like watch, you will always have a place for Rolex.

My watch journey start over 15 years ago when my late grandpa left me his 16014 after he passed on. It was used by him for over 25years as a daily. When my grandpa passed on, the watch was in a really used and almost not running condition. As a young man then with little savings, it took me few years to save enough and finally spent $1500 (cost more than the price of the watch my grandpa paid at Nanking watch in beach road in 1978) to have RSC restore it to a working condition.

Fast forward today....many watches come and go. This watch always stay and 5 others vintage that I acquired along the way will mostly be keepers for me.

Now, I am quite happy with my collection and don't see any piece leaving. Just maybe finding and hunting for that 1 or 2 slowly. Did I mention after a year's hunt, the Pam 190 is back with me for the 3rd time and likely for a long long time.

That's the reason why I only left Rolex for a day with Volcano.

I think Rolex watches have an everlasting appeal. Of course, the durability, resale value & instant recognition gives extra incentives to stick with the brand!!!

This thread does make me question myself as to what our individual "end game" might be. For those who have come full circle or for those who end up diversifying, at what point will you be contented with the combination / set of watches that you have on hand?

I know there will always be another "new release" or "grail" out there, but there has to be a certain point where u sit back, have the look of approval and say "ok, I am happy with what I have and it's time to slow down..."

I hope to get to that point someday.....

I just about getting there...after over 50 pieces and 7 years. I don't get excited by new releases, don't get sick with current pieces I have. Only have eyes to recapture a few that I miss in the past or sold off. So for 2012, maybe 1 or 2 more only.

Yes, totally understand your point abt not getting excited by new releases n not getting sick of ur current ones. I am sure the 190 is like one of the final few pieces of your jig-saw. Heheh

Yes. The 190 is the grail rad for me. It's all I need for Pam. Or at most, a base luminor too!
