  • Car workshop and which synthetic oil to use

    Hi,

My car (Nissan Latio) is due for 30k servicing. Can any kind souls recommend any reliable and cheap workshop for the servicing? And which type and brand of synthetic oil should I use? I am keen for Mobil 1, but there are 0W-40 and 5W-30, wonder which 1 is suitable for a modest Japanese car?

Please PM me if you have any good workshop. Really appreciate.

    Thanks.

There is one in Sin Ming Auto Point called F T Garage located at level 5. Their price is decent and reasonable. I go there for my servicing. Or you can go to Aspec at level 4 also at Sin Ming Autopoint. Mobil is good. You can go for 0W-40 for better protection of your engine.

    Cheers
    Don't worry, be happy

Just my $0.02, but for daily drive (stop-start driving), i think the 5W-30 is a better option. However if you intend on driving long distances (sin > ipoh), then may want to consider the 0W-40.

0W-40 should be slightly thicker if im not wrong.

No winter here do the W not so critical to me.

Newer engine I think 30 is better than 40.

But either also works, unless very specific like high compression rate sports car.

Thanks for the replies. Really appreciate it.

I was also being told that 5W-30 is more suitable for Latio, in fact, the manual specifically mentioned 5W-30 is preferable. I was only thinking from the point that 0W-40 is so-called more expensive than 5W-30 and I don't mind pay a bit more for better oil, so it oughts to be better, but seems like doesn't mean expensive is good. Confused...

Yes 0W = paying for better cold start winter rating. So expensive not equal better.

Like petrol if engine compression rate requires only 95, putting 98 will not give more power.

If service manual says 5W-30, then I'd just go with that. As mentioned earlier, no winter in sg, so no point getting 0W-40

Some claim that 98 will be cleaner for engine? Personally, I use 91 in oz, and 95 in sg/m'sia. dont find any difference in performance/milage, other than a higher fuel bill

If yours is a Na car and don't redline frequently, any fully synthetic oil will do, including those group 3 fully synthetic. Elf is a very good value for money oil, very understated. No pt using mobil 0/40. Cycle and carriage uses normal shell oil for their normal merc and Mobil 0/40 for their amg series.

Has anyone done any detailed research to see if synthetic oils between brands have any difference? my dad claims that oils are oil (as long as within the same family) and says that there is no difference other than the fancy packaging and brand.

Agreed. I heard some of my company Directors who earn so much yet use mineral oil and only service every 10km. They want to maximize servicing but spend minimum. Interesting?

To them their cars are maybe just "slightly more expensive toys" thus when spoil... change new cars!
