Will you buy watches that are without second hand?

As the title above, my friend shared with me that he will never buy watches without the second hand. In the event that there is problem with the movement, it might be too late to salvage while waiting for the minute hand to indicate any tell tale. What's your view on this?

Some watches without 2nd hand has a crystal/glass case back - u can see the movemednt. Eg Pam O varfiations viz 112 176

I can do without the date function, but not second hand. I like to see something moving on the dial... Haha!

I am ok with a watch without seconds hand or date but I have to admit sometimes it is bit of nuisance when I am looking for today's date. As someone has mentioned, with the clear case back, it is easy to check if the watch is ticking.

Not a good reason. If there is problem with the movement, wouldn't the time/minute hand slow down or stop? What's the diff with a second hand?

Just to share an experience

I have a "secondhand-less" watch which is a manual-winding movement. I would only wind it up fully whenever I wore it for the day. It would normally last two days thereabout. One fine work day, and a normal one (initially), I wore that watch to work and thought that I have it wound up in the morning because the time read correctly with my digital alarm clock at home as I put it on.

As usual, I went to work, the watch ticked ..... lunch time came and it continued to tick ..... well, all was fine. I was in my office on my report right after lunch and the watch continued to tick ..... Time passed and I am supposed to attend an external work meeting in the late afternoon on that day. I got on and on and on and on, on my report, almost immersed. I checked the time and saw that it was still early (or so I thought).

It showed "3pm". My meeting was at 4pm. And the actual time was already 5.30pm ... !! The watch stopped on me at 3pm without me realising it and I failed to attend the meeting.

So you know my response already ...

I don't check if the second hand is ticking when I see the time. I might if it is a new toy :P

I will. Simplicity is beauty my friend. Also, you don't need to see the second hand to know if the watch is working:-) You will know that sometime is wrong within the same day through some means. Therefore, this is subjective base on individual perception.

Same thing happened to me with my 112. Damn embarassing when asked why I missed the meeting.

It happened to me once with the Tag Cal. 16 some years back. Nowadays, I will check the time on my IP phone or laptop apart from looking at my watch.

Nah! Now i have the reason to wear 1 watch on each wrist.. :P
