communic asia 2011 - nokia N9

went to communic asia yesterday. had a hands on with this device.

first look is abit plastic feel. compared with HTC housing and iphone housing, i prefer HTC and iphone housing. however, due to the case material, it is close to about 30g lighter than my current HTC Desire HD. its weight is comparable to that of a iphone. light is always better. casing comes with black, pink, bright blue as well.

display size is a slightly smaller than HTC Desire and iphone which i feel that can be improved.

it is equipped with a 8MP carl zeiss camera which takes pretty decent pictures my current HTC Desire HD and has a slight edge over the iphone.

what is different about the maps on N9 and HTC Desire HD and iphone 4 is the 3D. HTC Desire HD and iphone 4 has google maps installed on the device. the maps are more 2D unlike the map on n9 which is 3D which may make navigation more interesting.

nokia recently has got windows 7 on its current batch of smart phone. however N9 comes with MeeGo. A relative new platform on Intel Atom and ARMv7 architecture. interesting, iphone is also using this CPU on their platform while HTC Desire HD is using Scorpion processor based on ARMv7 architecture.

my question is will Nokia ditched windows 7 and embrace MeeGo? Is MeeGo the up-coming platform for mobile software developers?

now the real concern is how will the battery life be on N9. HTC Desire HD battery life is tops 1 day. iphone best for me is 1½ day. portable charger is always required for me.

Triton, N9 is just a temporary measure from Nokia. very soon, the entire smartphone line from Nokia will be on Windows. Afterall, this is the new CEO's direction. He maybe marching the company towards a death ground to rebirth the company.

forgot to add, the home button is located @ the side of housing. i think is better so that it is possible for a bigger screen. however, for HTC Desire HD, the buttons are touch sensor type, makes it abit harder to play games where the activation of keys is slightly higher

Correct - N9 is an overdued product so MeeGo exist way before Nokia's tie-up with Microsoft. Whether Windows is the winning solution I dare not say, but clearly Nokia is not capable of further developing its own smartphone OS to rival iOS and Android.

It's interesting to see who will buy N9, the only phone with Meego, and how many apps will be developed for a dying platform...
