  • TIPS - How to open a stuck Rolex Box

Today, I had to perform an emergency operation on a box… let me explain.

A Rolex Box such as this shown in the picture below is actually clad with “fancy” paper. These papers are widely used by manufacturers to dress-up the watch boxes to look exquisite. It may look like leather, metal or wood but its printed paper. So glue is applied to this paper and then pasted onto plywood or MDF boxes.

Sometimes after a long while, left in a drawer, the glue will permeate to the outer surface thus sticking the lid together. This is pretty common in humid locations such as in Asia.

When this happens, please DO NOT force the box open or you will tear the paper. Instead, put a drop of cooking oil on a steel rule (15cm type) and insert just the tip of the steel rule into the opening. Twist slowly at every length of the stuck area. As you twist the steel rule, the surface gets “oiled” at the same time. This is actually a traditional way to remove sticky residue. Have you tried removing the stickiness from a knife after cutting up a jackfruit? It’s the same way.

Once you have successfully opened the box, immediately wipe off the edges of the box with tissue paper. If you don’t, the reverse will happen. That is, the oil will permeate into the paper and the glue will not longer be effective and the paper comes loose.

The same method can be applied to any “paper boxes”. If you’re not sure what material your box is clad with, you can email me with the picture to diy@sg-roc.com for "medical/mechanical" advice.

Hope you guys learn from my experience today and......... don’t get disappointed that your Rolex Box is actually paper clad and not leather. I was also shocked to discover this.

You can Google for suppliers of "Fancy Paper"... or "Decorative Paper" to see what I mean.

    Cheers!

Thanks for sharing. This sticky lids problem also happens to the box of my brand new roles leh...guess the box had been stored for at least some months at the retailer before the watch was sold. What I do is place the edge of the wipping cloth (that comes with the box) in between the lids so prevent them from sticking together
