Ya, that's why it is easy for either teochew or hokkien to pick up either language once they are good with one of it.

Father is Swatow Teochew, Mother is Indonesian Hokkien. Speaks fluent hokkien. That's why they call Mother's tongue. For teochew, level of proficiency probably <30% but can understand almost 100% teochew.

                    Hainan - yen dao (handsome)
                    Teochew - hou liao (showy)
Hokkien - toa pao (bull ****)

Those are not what I say, but the common saying passed down from olden days, hehe.

Mean no discrimination but just to add some fun to this thread so please don't flame me.

Maybe you have heard of some others...?

                          Quite a few Hainanese here

                          Paternal side: Hokkien (can speak)
                          Maternal side: Hainanese (can speak)
In laws: Cantonese (can listen cannot speak, or rather I can speak but you probably will not be able to understand )

Teach you guys some Hainanese: "bus bo bus? bo bus da taxi" (the "s" in the word "bus" is a silent s)

                              Hokchiew reporting. Any Hokchiew around?
And no, you are not Hokchiew if your father is Hokkien and your mother Teochew

It would sound more correct if you change the "S" to "T"
