s'pore can also; but one problem. no space. im not sure i can live on 500 sqft, and landed properties are getting harder and harder to find now in sg if im not mistaken. Currently im staying on a 1/4 acre block, and a house with about 300sqm. a block like that in sg, will cost me two arms and both my legs

Back on the topic. I bought a Garmin Nuvi 5000 from Amazon US more than a year ago. Map is not a problem as there are plenty out there for Garmin GPS. Used it in Central Europe, Indonesia and Malsing. No problem at all.

It locks pretty fast and the screen has high resolution. You can also load the maps on SD card. Best is, it can also be a "monitor" for rear parking sensor. The drawback, it has no battery, so you can use it for "pedestrian mode".

All in all, very good experience with Garmin as standalone GPS.

if your gps can use as a monitor, then you need to get video input from somewhere, and wouldnt that defeat the purpose of portability. because your car end up got a couple coming up onto the dash.

imo if you really need a proper gps, because portable units sometimes can have troubles locking on. the advantage of iphone gps is because it uses triangulation (radio towers); therefore best to get a head unit that support gps, reversing cam, the lot. that way, you install one gps receiver on the parcel shelf or at the front-top of the dash, and have the directions displayed on the large display. goes without saying, that those units can cost upwards of $2k last i checked, then you have to add antenna, camera (if needed), additional wiring, ripping up carpet to wire it through etc.

the reverse camera input is just an additional feature. Some more this was priced like 150USD then. Now price increased le:

Not sure about map availability on the Motorola though.

The iPhone solution is using Google Maps right? If yes, then it needs a constant internet connection to load up the map.

no, i use tom tom whilst i was in sg; triangulation doesnt require an internet connection, just need to be connected to the network. if im not mistaken.

Thats until you buy standalone software . I'm thinking of getting this anyone got any experience with this? looks relatively decent, and it allows for charging at the same time.

Since my car not worth it to install a double din head unit. otherwise i would use it, as then my iphone can double up as a incar mp3 player.
