To say the word " need " --- I think alot of things in life these days are more of a "want" rather than a "need"
But at certain point of life, I think watches do hold sentimental value, be it the first watch after that first paycheck, or from your girlfriend/ wife etc etc.
Besides, watches are small enough to carry it wherever you go.
And yes, like what some mentioned here -- watches is a good ice-breaker in conversation with anyone.
Since watchmaking has much history behind it, it adds more "oomph" to your conversation as well, rather than talking about fashion.
Sometimes through the type of watches one collect, you can also tell some things about the owner since watches are very personal to one.
Do I need watches? honestly, no. We can tell time easily these days.
But I like them because of sentimental reasons and maybe, being a female, we just love to collect things. LOL.

Besides a mechanical watch, what else you can use 24hrs a day with you (which serve a function) for your life, your next generation's life, your next next generation's life... in this high tech disposable world?
And probably become more valuable over the 100 years?
depends on how much you value time also , if I go travelling to some holiday resort (like when i went bali). time is not a concern. i didnt take my watch, just went there see the sky and party
