Anyway, my 2 cents worth. When I first started off, my wife and I talked about this, and I asked her. Big diamond ring, or buy house? We decided to scrimp and save and go for an EC right away after marriage. Along the way, our philosophy then became buy the biggest ticket asset first, then the smaller ones downwards (car next, etc)

Theory is this, if you keep buying the small ticket items because you can afford it, then you'll never be able to save up for the big ticket one. But once you've got past the big ticket item, and start to be comfortable, the small ticket items will come naturally, because along the way, you've inculcated a savings habit.

A story to share about saving money.

An old man had a son who didn't work hard or save any more. So the old man decided to teach him a lesson. He gave the son two buckets, one was okay, but the other one had a big hole in the bottom. So he asked the son to leave the bucket with a hole, and go fetch water from the well with the good one, objective being to fill up the bucket. Obviously, the son couldn't, coz everytime he drew water from the well and poured it into the bucket with a hole, everything leaked out.

So the old man told the son to do it the other way around, leave the whole on, and use the one with the hole to draw the water from the well. And the son realised, that even though when he drew water from the well with the bucket that had a hole, it managed to retain some water when he reached the whole bucket. So little by little, he managed to fill up one whole bucket of water.

So the old man told the son, if you don't save, no matter how much money you earn (drawing a full bucket from the well), your expenses is like a bottomless bucket. But it you save a little everytime, you'll be able to accumulate riches.

that is what my parents did too. they went to aquire as many properties as possible and make do with the income (peanuts) that they had. they copped a fair bit of flak for being too ambitous, but at the end of the day, they have achieved their target and they think they have make right choice.

Wah... Expose me ah... But I HDB dweller with zero income and unemployed. Nobody will bother with me lah.

Back to topic, I've taken a liking to Leith Park area. Both the small condo projects and landed are pretty nice. Might lean towards one if God is nice to me.
