Backing Out of Deals, is it wrong?

It's not the colour or creed, sometimes. I sold my IWC Portuguese chrono to one of the nicest & easiest gentleman ever! On the day of the deal, I waited for him at my office block & along came this elderly gentleman whom looked like a regular despatch uncle (sorry, no disrespect for despatch, it's an honest job). Of course, I didnt pay much attention to him as I was expecting some long sleeves guy or at least, younger. He approached me & called my name & I was in total shock. He looked at the watch casually & I even have to show him the warranty card matching the watch serial number. We talked a little & he took out his wallet filled with thousand dollar notes & paid me. He told me it's a gift for himself cos all the while he's wearing an Omega while his peers are in Pams & IWCs. Guess he didnt wanna lost out & didnt wanna pay a premium for BNIB. We shook hands & parted but not before I told him not to be too trusting as there are crooks out there.

Well, give reasonable time frame, but hey better that you back out last min than u meet the seller/buyer then he backs out for some other funny reason also lah. Or worst still, buy already want to return back to you. Look on the bright side people

Seeking Opinions: No Right Or Wrong

Ok, 1st and foremost, I am a newbie to all this. I'm just trying to seek all of your opinions. There's no right or wrong, just wanna get a feel of things.

1. If I arrange a viewing with the seller at any place we agreed upon, does it mean that I am obligated to buy? Or is this what it means: a viewing? Do I have to feel 'paiseh' if I dun buy?

2. If I arrange a viewing with the seller at RSC, then sent the watch for verification, in this case, am I obligated to buy? What if I decided not to buy after verifying the watch is genuine?

3. If after viewing at seller's convenience, I cannot make up my mind, then I go home and decide to buy, is it bad manners to ask seller to go RSC to verify? (In this case of course I am buying)

Personally I've never done any of the above. Just asking so I would not piss someone off in future.... Thanks.

1. dont think obligated to buy, of coz you view when you really interested in the watch, not see for fun and waste pple time.
2. likely the buyer have to pay for the verification, even if the deal doesnt fall thru, think buyer still likely to be liable for the cost incurred.
3. im sure thats not an issue, if you are sincere in buying

of coz all the above are dependent on both sides prior neg and agreement.

If I may add on to the first two points...

1. If you want to view yet not sure of buying, check with seller if he is ok with no-obligation viewing. Not all sellers are happy with that. Some (or should I say "most") buyers want to agree on price prior to viewing and expect you to buy if condition is verified as stated (sure, not all people define good or mint condition the same way but that's another discussion)

2. I would be damn pissed off if you back out after the watch is verified genuine, coz you wasted my time. Why go for authentication if you aren't sure of buying?

It is not nice to ask the seller to goto your destinated place and let you view a watch that you have no interest in.
It is ok to goto the seller destinated place if you view n decide not to buy.

If it is a BNIB watch, yes, you are obligated to buy.
If it is not a BNIB watch, buyer just have to pay verification fee. But pls note that verification can be a very time wasting process.
Seller might took leave to attend to this as RSC is opened only on mon to fri.

It's me again =p (taking a break from the mundane tasks)

My personal thoughts:

The purpose of viewing is to ascertain the cosmetic & working condition of the piece, completeness of box, papers etc. It is really not to try on the watch to see how it looks and feels, or to get wife's opinion on the watch etc. Buyer needs to be rather sure that this is what he/she wants. If buyer wants to try the watch to see if fits his wrists/cuffs or if wife/partner likes it, the best place is to go to the boutique or AD where the sales folks there can entertain u. So this will address (1) & (3) of your question.

If the watch is a hot piece or listing at an attractive price, view and hold may not be a good strategy as seller is not obliged to reserve the watch for u after viewing if there are already other keen & ready buyers.

As for (2), it's pretty straightforward No-No. Doing the RSC verification is regarded as a strong commitment to close the deal. Some sellers may even require u to place a small deposit before verification.

Always fair to have the right intention to buy before anyhow calling for meetup.

Always fair to bring full amount and be ready to deal as a form of sincerity.

Most sellers are ok if you dont buy due to something unacceptable about the item but do have the courtesy not to waste peoples time thats all.
