because Im doing part time degree at SIM now, want to find a job in the finance sector, but it's very hard because my diploma is not related to the field. Remisier is one of the few option open to me. As for dealer, minimum requirement is a degree holder. If let's say my dad and his client trade stocks frequently, is it ok for me to start off as remisier given the connection? Is it really so risky to be a remisier? What if I start off as a remisier first then switch to a dealer upon getting my degree, is it possible? As for career advancement, is it possible for me to advance up to consultant job and banker upon getting my degree, or even financial analyst. Please someone please help me!!!!
Bro, everything alright? Appears that you are under a lot of pressure. While it is good to plan, there may be little purpose in asking if it is a good career, as success/wealth (or the lack of it) depends on numerous factors. It could be tougher to gain entry if your previous diploma is not related to the job, but I'm not in HR, so take my words with a large pinch of salt!
Whatever it is, don't take it so hard!

i don't know about you,,, it very much depends on your expectation, character and such,,,
there are people i know who do very well in MLM companies, insurance and property agents. I know I will not survive in that kind of environment. I am more or less a "corprate" person after my graduation.
Sometimes you need to soak yourself in the environment and see if you like it and gauge whether you be enjoying or just survivng it.
Every job/career is good as long as they are legal and you feel good at the end of the day earning your paycheck.
A good amd successful remisier can buy watches that I can only dream of,,,,,
1. status - will the job gain the status you wanted? can you attain it? high status may not mean high pay all the time. Low status can make lots of money too. Popular char quay teow disclosed on tv he fried 500 plates a day (conservative estimate?) and one man show. Go figure how much is the earnings. No wonder wear rolex.
2. job - do you like the job scope or can you accept the job scope? some job very tough but people like it. Lawyers, auditors never see daylight at peak. some like the challenge and prospect.
3. pay - how much remuneration are you targeting at? say if you target 10K in 5 years, but no body in the line attained 10K ever, then it is not what you want. say the line's top range 50K/mth, i know insurance agent making this kind of money, but only 1-2% attained it. can you be the 1-2%?
went down for an interview today...all I get is being suan.
1) changing the field of study (from design[diploma] to management[degree] reflect that Im immature?
2) By explaining to the interviewer that Management degree is my interest, he say that Im dishonest, thus do not possess integrity.
3)He claim that SIM is for those that do badly in poly/ those who flank in studies, any tom dick and harry can get in.
4)he feel that I couldnt convince ppl to invest through me because Im too young(23yr old), because most of those he train are directors and etc.WOW!
5)Im denied a chance because of my academic.
6) he keep on beat around the bush asking me how can I show him result?
Im not feeling sore/not whining either. Just feel that Im treated like a fool and wasted my trip down for the interview which Im looking forward to. Feeling very sad because he say SIM are for Tom dick and harry. Why? For me I feel that SIM is a place to grant people who have not done well for poly a second chance. I feel so humiliated and insulted. I know education do play a part, but come on, the minimum requirement for remisier is only 4 Os, and Im way above that. He could have been more tactful with his words, why is he prejudice against SIM?
i believe he just wants to see if u exhibit strong salesmanship by bringing you down.
ull prob end up servicing customers who are trading online.. getting a cut from their trade comms. u can really do well like the rest of the shifus here claimed.. know your way/people around.
dont be discouraged... i was in a very similar situation as you (from poly). and moreover, they arent exactly the most sought after firm.
L&T has a reward system that allows u to offset trade comms... every other house's reward system is pretty much
imho both KE + L&T boast better basic Internet platform for trading stocks.
turned down an offer from their derivatives arm a yr back... (im not in a brokerage firm btw).
dont give up.. opportunities are aplenty... just keep exploring/trying...hard!
Sometimes ppl say hurtful things. Well I have been in sales line b4. I took craps from my boss, my seniors, some bad colleagues and of cos from my customers. In my younger days, I was pretty affected. But now, I look back and I must really thank them for "training" me. I would not be what I am today if not for these ppl. I now run a small company with 30 staff. Smile and thank those who look down on you becos they will only make you stronger. Take it in good stride... Cheers!

You went to interview for remisier at Phillip? I have friends from SIM working on their trading desk who were employed as trainee dealers when they started out. I think its more a personal thing, nothing to do with your school.
You must prove to them who you can bring in as clients before they will consider, nothing to do with qualifications.

just dun be dishearted.do whatever u can to prove him wrong.stir him back when 1 day u become rich and powerful.
Yeah.. don't be dishearten mate. Sometimes folks talk down to you to see how you react and how you 'sell' yourself. If you project confidence and can convince, you not only impress but you 'win' with whoever you talk to.
Anyway, when you are young, the seniors in whatever field might take advantage of you. Most important is you never give up and keep trying to do what you really want to do.
A friend of mine used to work for a bank which I will refer to as local. He told me of this young overseas grad who went to work for them. As the junior guy, he was expected to do all the 'saikang', which including buying coffee for the seniors and standing inline to buy 4D/ToTo for them every single day.
Well, since he had to buy 4D/ToTo for others, he bought 'Quickpick' every single day. He was lucky and hit the 2 mil jackpot not too long ago. He's known as ToTo boy in the office as he framed up a photocopy of the Singapore Pools cheque. Anyway, heard that he rose up the ranks and does investment banking in London now.
Bottom line, never give up. You only feel looked down if you let another person's opinion grind you in the dirt.
