Buy car is like buying anything else, your luck. Some people have it real bad, even with a new car. Others, just cruise it. I have been lucky so far. Previously, I had a A4 1.8T souped it up. No problems with the turbo and that car lasted me till 115k km (afterwhich I sold it).

A 5 year old 523, or any 5 year old continental car, will have some problems and you'll need to invest in some repair or parts replacements due to wear and tear. But don't worry, the car can easily be driven for 10 years or more as long as you are willing to put up with those problems. However, Performance motors charges an arm and leg for even basic repairs and hence, better to find outside lobang for the repairs. If you really want to have a worry free experience, suggest you get one that is about 2 years old.

        Thanks for the quick responses

I've checked the more recent (2 yrs old) ones.... but they cost not much less than brand new

I thought BMW = Buy More Worries

The previous 523i model always need to top up 1 L of engine oil ( don;t ask me why, the service staff at PML said its normal for this model ). Wondering this latest model need to do the same thing too?

I have to do this too but as long as the car runs fine, I'm ok with it. Small price to pay for a smooth running engine.

My alfa 156 had this too. The oil seeps into the cylinders and gets combusted. Didn't affect anything else though. Can't wait for the new 5 myself.

Well, its the characteristic of the engine. What you going to do? Thankfully, my car does not suffer the problems your 'friends' are facing.... at least not yet anyway.

Even the best of them (read: Toyota/Lexus) has its fair share of problems, so going back to my first post on this, its your luck....which ever car you buy.
