I hear curtin got plan to open a proper campus up in s'pore some time in 2010.... by that time, i long finished that time maybe if my bro interested in coming exchange, can do in s'pore.

Getting ajob not easy. Employee takes peanuts home, pay increment very very slow, expectation and job scope widen. Don't make life difficult for fresh grads lah just give them a job. Thats what happen to me 9 years ago.

this is problem with consumers of TODAY. they are so focussed on price, they neglect quality, furthermore, they complain quality no good, and price too high. This is why as boss we have to squeeze and cut corners. Sometimes even squeezing wages to save cost, afterall.... gahmen cannot squeeze price, utilities also cannot squeeze, and as a result, the belt now tighten on workers to perform harder, and for marginal sums of money.

giving job is easy, but training and maintenance really kill the business. And now I see in s'pore some people budget so tight, they have to put cooking oil back on shelf as cannot afford to buy...... its sad to see, sometimes look back, we are the lucky ones.

im fine with paying employee a little more. but some dont deserved it. with higher competition, higher cost of operation especially with the current oil prices that keeps going up, some things will have to cut. im currently task to reduce operational costs.

i have embarked on this project. first stage is in place. it is now being monitored. im planning for second stage. there are ways to cut operating costs. if electricity is a killer, then look @ the source of high costs - air con? then tune to right temperature and install fans to circulate the cool air. if it is paper, ration out. force staff to use recycle paper whenever possible.

actually training a new staff can help cut operational costs. why? a staff who has been with the company for many years will cost the company more than a freash employee. alternatively is employee foreign talent. however, i still believe in local staff as they are more familiarised with local culture. if 2 candidates with similar education background and/or work experience, the candidate will have to show me what value added skills he/she can provided. the one who has this value added skills gets the job irregardless of local or foreign.

very true, actually I consider the university as marely a life jacket, it will *HELP* you to stay afloat, but you have to make an attempt to go and cling on to something more solid.

The second one, there is no manual/textbook/course on it. You just live and learn.

Sometimes I think having too many 'paper' qualifications actually are barriers to greater things...

If we are in a good and comfortable job due to having paper quali, the incentive to risk it all and doing something that you like is actually quite big. Losing the stability of a job, etc. Cos with paper qualifications, getting a job shouldn't be a big issue. I mean getting a job for a living... BUT... getting a job that one desires is another thing altogether.

So... comes another guy without papers quali. Can risk it all and don't need to think too much... cos nothing much to lose anyway. Destiny is in his own hands...

We live in an air-con society, are we willing to run out in the sun to get hot and sweaty and yet also risk rain?

On TS topic, no offence to local grads but I personally feel that overseas help cultivate character and promotes creative thinking better than the structured educational system locally.. I am commenting this as true during the 1990 to 2000. I can't be certain how much tat change nw.

Personally, I totally agree with armchaireconomist perspective... Regardless of one's education background, the working world itself is another University we are in nw. we can never prepare enough to face up to life experiences... Its a jungle out there till u have mastered the skills to survive before being more equip to strategise one's career path/goals in life and wealth targets.
The reality to it all..... Experience is a mean teacher...

agree totally. I have seen some socalled young guns, who are so damn smart, they cant drive, spread butter on toast, life's basic skills.
To me that is useless as even with the best education, you will be severely handicapped in life.
