(SINGAPORE) Taiwan could join the growing number of Asian countries that are choosing to legalise gambling, with casino operators setting their sights there.
Jonathan Galaviz, a partner of Las Vegas-based strategy tourism and gaming consulting firm Globalysis, said that it is not surprising that Taiwan would look to casino gaming legalisation as a tool to generate broad travel and leisure sector growth for its economy.
'However, what is surprising is that both current presidential candidates in Taiwan have indicated their relatively strong support for the legalisation of casino gaming, in an election season,' he added.
Taiwan will join Japan and Thailand who are currently examining the issue of casino legalisation while Cambodia, Jeju Island (South Korea) and Vietnam are also looking at the liberalisation of the industry.
Thailand's recently elected prime minister has also given tacit support for casinos.
