  • Medisave set to rise...

MEDISAVE contribution is set to go up to so that Singaporeans will have enough money to pay for long term nursing care should they need it.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said on Thursday that the current contribution rate of 6.5 to 9 per cent does not build up enough reserves to pay for both big medical bills and long-term care.

The 25-year-old Medisave was originally meant to pay only for major hospital stays. It has since been expanded to include some outpatient payments.

The need for such care will increase as the population ages, Mr Khaw told reporters after donating blood at the Health Sciences Authority on Thursday morning.

The additional quantum for contribution will depend on what Members of Parliament are willing to support when this subject comes up for debate on the Budget announcement, he said.

'The amount will depend on the care you want to use Medisave to pay for,' said Mr Khaw, assuring that the rise will be less than 5 per cent.
