  • Doctor's jail term cut to $5k fine for drink driving

A 59-YEAR-OLD doctor who appealed against her two-week jail term for drink driving has had the sentence reduced to a $5,000 fine.

Dr Irene Lim Kay Hian, a senior consultant radiologist at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital, looked relieved after her appeal was allowed. She remains banned from driving for four years.

Justice Chao Hick Tin said he will give written reasons for his decision at a later date.

Dr Lim's lawyer, Senior Counsel Sant Singh, argued that her decision to drive was not deliberate but arose out of her distraught state when she got a phone call in the middle of the night saying that a close aunt was in a bad state in hospital.

On her way to the National University Hospital, Dr Lim's car stalled along the Pan Island Expressway near the Clementi Avenue 6 exit.

A patrol officer with the Expressway Monitoring Advisory System who checked on the car, noticed the woman smelt of alcohol and the Traffic Police was called in. A breathalyser test at the police station showed she had 129 mcg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, nearly four times the legal limit of 35 mcg.

It would have been quite traumatic for her to be jailed. She's the sister of Lim Kay Tong and Lim Kay Siu, and her parents were both doctors.

Drink driving is still an offence be it at any state. If it was anyone else I bet the punishment would be much husher. Talk about our legal system

think there's a similar case round a year ago.

An ang mo expat got drunk near orchard towers in the wee morning. was walking back and became paranoid cause he thinks some1 is tailing him.

saw a goods lorry parked idling nearby. jumped into it and took off. crashed it into a tree and got off with just a 6k fine.

subsequently he jumped in the next airplane and went back home. vowing never to return.

End of the day, as long as you have the money to employ the service of a good lawyer to argue about your case, everything will be fine...

                      now ask yourself this qns....

what if the offender is some peasant who drove his lorry (instead of car), exact same reasons as the doctor (on why he drink drive)... in the exact same scenario..

No $ to hire a good lawyer... but used the same reasons... now what would the verdict be? 5k fine?

I hope you have followed this case: no one was injured. Don't know how this translates to trauma because of her actions.

so if no one is injured she deserves a lesser sentense?

hey if i grow my own weed for own consumption..would i get a lesser sentense?

it should be "thank god nobody's killed or injured because of her actions" not "no one is killed/injured so a slap on the wrist would do"

we are talking about trauma - not about sentence. so your point is quite pointless i am afraid.
