this is just a senario for all to share their views in regards to how much you would spend on a watch relative to savings had..

I read in some self improvement book long time ago that you should always set aside 6months to 1 year of your monthly income for rainy days.
IMO that is very good and simple financial management.

here is how it works.for example:-

if you only need $1K to survive each month, then 10K is a lot and you can consider saving $6k to $7K and spending the rest to buy a watch.

if you need $5K to sustain yourself each month, then you are broke if you only have $10K, better save 10 times that amount (i.e $50K) before you consider buying a rolex.

it is all about how much you need to spend a month (your fixed costs) Versus your cash in hand.

                      In this case:

                      1. Save the $10k cash.
                      2. Buy on interest-free 24-month instalment.
                      3. Provided your monthly income is relatively stable & more than comfortable for the monthly instalment.

                      Make any sense?

This remind me of my friends "and myself" when I was still studying in Secondary. We were "hooked" on branded shirts and jeans in the 90s, whatever income earned from p/t job during sch holidays and limited allowance, we just spurged on it. Then when we hang out at Orchard to "show off", we have to think for moments before buying a cup of coke from BK. Now that I look back, it seems pretty silly. Perhaps a Ocean Pacific T shirt would have been more appropriate than that Valentino or Armani T shirt.

I would say 20-25% of your liquid savings will be good. In the worse case scenario, even if you force sell your watch, at most you lose 20% of what you paid earlier, which probably amounts to 4-5% of your total liquid savings.

                          IWC 500112 Laureus Limited Edition

                          Wish list:
                          116613LB?
                          a good White dial watch

4 years back, i once spent 60% of my current savings on a watch....thats how crazy i am previously...

now, i will make sure its no more than 10%-15% of current savings

At some point in our lives, many people have done this. That's part of growing up. From an older, wiser, been-there-done-that point of view, better for this to happen earlier in life than later.

So, whenever I feel like doing this again, I will always remember the first time I did it and how miserable the experience was. Good lesson for life.
