in wake of celebrities' personal intimate photos being stolen from icloud (read here) where apple says it is not the case of a breach in any apple systems (read here), it is time we need to be careful what we store on our phones and where it is being stored.
it is therefore important that the system makes it easy for users to backup and store information but once the information is on the cloud, there is the issue of security. once the security is breached, the consequences can be undesirable. i will like to backup my contact list on the cloud but nothing more - these include my email settings, any photos, miscellaneous notes, etc.
i use both iOS and android phones. i make it a point to do a backup of both phones on my home pc on a weekly basis. this is good practice as you can "clone" new phone with existing data almost immediately. i also make copy our all the pictures/videos out of the phone onto the pc. this would less the impact of losing data if the phone is lost/misplaced.
however some people store credit card details, user log on details and passwords on their phones. can you imagine if you lost/misplace your phone? the person who picks it up chooses not to return it. the user reformat the phone and use it, then you are lucky. however, if the user is someone who has the right tools to break your phone, can you imagine what can happen?

- make sure using iOS7
- go Settings - iCloud then ensure Find My iphone is turn on.
- go to iCloud account to activate lost mode (lost mode allows users to immediate lock your phone and allows user to set a custom message and number to display on the phone.)
- at the last resort, user can erase the data from your phone rendering it unusable unless user appleid and password are entered.
- samsung android user
- go to apps - security and check the box for reactivation lock. a notification will appear asking user to sign into or create a samsung account . user can then lock their phone remotely and play a sound.
- windows user
- go to www.windowsphone.com/en-us/my/find and sign in user's microsoft account on your windows phone. it will then display location of your phone. user can choose to lock the phone remotely allows user to set a message to display. if option to retrieve is not available, user can choose option to erase to data on phone.
