  • New vs Old = Religion?

    Hi, I'd like to discuss and hope we can all share this.

    Since this watch hobby started, I'm always in 2 minds about getting a new watch vs a pre-own one. A guru here I often consult, posed this qns: "Is it a religion for you to only buy brand new watches?"

    Sometimes, I find it hard to answer . I know there are pros and cons in the 2 camps but I'll like to hear/see more ideas/views/opinions/suggestions. A more recent encounter I had was someone advising me, "buy NEW for loved ones; get PRE-OWN for yourself" .

    Till today, I've not bought a pre-own watch . So, let me ask (again): "Is buying only new also your religion?"

      My "religion" says that it doesn't matter as long as it is:

      1. what I want...not necessarily need ;
      2. in good condition; and
      3. comes with the complete set including box and paper.

              Same, i only buy new from AD now.
              Perhaps when i become too poison, and have learnt more about verifying and checking the condition of pre-owned, then i will consider pre-owned.

                condition and price of pre-own pcs has to be attractive, if not go for brand new.

                  right now, i am still a student. don't have much of my own money to play around with. i like pre-owned watches now, as the loss is less. of course the pre-own price has to be significant if not no point.

                  i think getting a pre-owned watch for a loved one is okay. i don't feel bad in anyway about giving a pre-owned watch (don't say casio or seiko la). if you receive a nice vintage rolex or other nice pieces but its pre-owned, you will also feel very surprised / happy i suppose?

                  if i can afford brand new, i will definately get it, that way i can wear it in, add my own scratches, have my own jaw dropping moments with the watch etc.

                    I don't care BNIB or preowned... as long as condition up to my standard and price is GOOD!

                      So far I've only bought new, and the reason for this is quite simple. This is simple that's on my wrist the whole day, its very personal to me. Its not something I would want to have on someone else's arm before I wear it. Kind of like clothes to me I guess.

                      Although my head tells me pre-own is much cheaper, I'ld rather hold out and save up to buy new. If its worth it, no problem in waiting a little longer.

                      From this, you can guess that I'm not a flipper. I buy my watches to wear and to keep.

                        That "religion" applies to me too but only for current models... for discontinued models like 16700 and my FM casa 10th anniv, I can't get it from AD so have to buy preowned...
