Calling all Whisky lovers!

Didn't know there is so much knowledge in whisky. What is the best value whisky to buy from the dfs? Used to buy Jim beam , chavis , Johnny walker but looking for a change .

Blended whisky like the ones you mentioned are very good value but for single malt, I think the glenlivet 15 years or Glenmorangie 10yrs is pretty good value. Has anyone tried the Johnny Walker traveller series? Any good?

Btw, for those who travel a lot, might be good to get the limited edition Glenlivet Guardians Chapter at DFS, which is is a whisky style picked by whisky lovers all over the world. Have tried it and is pretty solid. I get a feeling that this whisky will rise in price in time to come.

So far, I didn't hear any return in investment for liquor. I still have 2 bottles of cordon bleu which I bought for under $200 at dfs in the 90s, but I doubt I could earn anything from it

But drinking to appreciate and limit to not more than 1 glass per day.

i dont think it is just whisky price will go up in future but any bottled alcohol. however, most whisky needs to be aged and the cask used blended ones usually comes from those used before to make other types of alcohol. if the cask are getting harder to come by, then the amount of certain type of whisky produced will be reduced. by law of economics, low supply, high demand means higher prices.

another possibility of whisky prices going up could be due to the age of whisky, the older the whisky, the less in supply hence low supply, high demand will drive up prices.

for chivas, i prefer the 21 and 25. 25 bottled ones are usually serialized.

suntory recently has been having more stakes in other companies to boost its branding.

as of it is, whisky is something i feel that is very personal. just like wine. everyone has their own favorite because taste buds different. what is recommended by others may not suit you.

Yes I buy whisky with the same mindset as I buy wines, it's not really for investment but it's great to be able to drink something that has appreciated in value over the years. I realized that most of these mass produced or regular label do increase in price but not by leaps and bounds. But some llimited edition liquor including vintage whisky do increased in price quite dramatically. I was checking out some whisky with vintage years and prices are so expensive! I think it might be better to get a 18 yr label that has been kept for a long time.

Just thought I introduce one of the whisky that started my interest in this liquor besides wine. That's the Kavalan brand from Taiwan. I was not a whisky drinker at all until I was posted to Taiwan and my friend recommended me to try this strange brand called Kavalan. Apparently, taken from some website.. "Founded in 2005, Kavalan, the first whisky distillery built in Taiwan, caused an international incident in the world of whisky when it beat traditional Scottish brands at a blind tasting held on Burns Night in 2010. Even the likes of renowned whisky expert Jim Murray named one of Kavalan’s whiskies “Best New World Whisky” in his 2012 edition of The Whisky Bible." So when I was there, I bought almost every single type of whisky they produce and was hook on some of their release, especially the vinho and sherry cask. The Fino, which is their flagship was also excellent.. Complex but very enjoyable at the same time.. Not for the faint hearted though. Since then, have asked my friends to bring over every time they come here. I just recently found out that LA Maison Du Whisky at Robertson quay brought it in end of last year. So you can buy and try it if anyone is keen to try something different. Just sharing.. No stakes or interest in any of the above companies mentioned or in the beverage industry.

Had the privilege of trying the Glenmorangie Signet yesterday night. I must say it was an exceptional drink that was reminiscence of blue label but with a more chocolaty nose and nice smooth finish. The bottle itself was very well made glass (or crystal?) with the cork cap that weigh a ton! Anyone knows how much this is retailing here? Have not really seem this in DFS or may have missed that.

i had previously bought a couple of Ballantines 17yrs and limited. drank both to the last drop pretty fast (a week per bottle, mostly on the rock), as they are smooth. Had a Glenfiddich 18yr but had difficulty in finishing it...

looking forward to (buy and) try Glenmorangie, Kavalan, Mark's maker (my dad said it tastes similar to jack d) and Yamazaki
