Ming Yi approves S$60,000 loan to MP Ong Seh Hong

SINGAPORE: The sixth day of the trial against former Ren Ci CEO, Shi Ming Yi, threw light on the way staff loans were granted, even though the hospital did not have a formal policy on it.

The court on Thursday heard that Ming Yi had approved several loans to various staff. Among them, was Dr Ong Seh Hong who is currently the community hospital's chief operating officer and clinical director of Ren Ci Hospital and Medicare Centre.

Dr Ong is also a Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC. When contacted by Channel NewsAsia, the MP said he is unable to comment as the trial is still ongoing.

Testifying in court, Ren Ci's former human resource manager, Joyce Teng Lee Foong, said the staff loan was made to Dr Ong when he first joined the hospital in 2000.

The S$60,000 loan is understood to be the largest sum approved by Ming Yi. It is not known whether the loan has been repaid.

The court also learnt that Ming Yi's former aide, Raymond Yeung, was offered an employment contract in 2001, despite his unsuccessful application for an employment pass.

Ming Yi subsequently granted Yeung a S$50,000 loan, even though the latter remained without an employment pass until 2004. This was recorded on Ren Ci's books as a loan made to Mandala Buddhist Cultural Centre.

At issue now is whether Yeung, who is an Australian citizen and only became a Singapore Permanent Resident in 2006, had received the loan as a legitimate Ren Ci employee.

    The trial continues.

I don't agree on your comment, louisoh. Yes, Ming Yi might have brenched some laws but the question is did he gain from all those approval made by him? In the media, there were issues about the amount he was paid and also the amount his assistance was paid... those I don't listen, they deserved those money.... no pay who want to work???

I just feel it is a sad thing to bring down a good leader for a small mistake... very sad...

Everyone will made mistake. But not everyone have the courage to admit truthfully and face punishments.

One should not bring old matters to defend himself, when he face trouble.

One should admit his mistake truthfully and let the "law" decides.

Defend is necessary if one is wrongfully accused.

Turn your head and you will see the Shore......

Well said and I agree with you that Rev Ming Yi is a good leader. I am a great admirer of his charitable works for Ren Ci Hospital and still is.

Think he might offended some ppl which cannot be offended. Strange thing is MP earn so much still need to borrow $$ arhh somemore from a NON-profit Org.

Personally, I think borrowing is very normal. Even the US govt also issue bonds. Borrow return with interest very good. Borrow got return is ok. Borrow but never return then something is wrong...

Helping others is Good deeds. There are alot of poor old folks and children in the world that need help and food.

No one can answer who deserve to be help.

But we must always use the correct way to help and not the robin hood way.

All these things about credit cards and branded goods.....legally he has done no wrong but morally, that's for others to perceive. Same for many other charity or religious leaders or even the Pern Sec who went to learn cooking in France. All legally permissible but we don't live in a world where legally right= right. Moral, social norms are something that make up the society too.

I have become more skeptical on these organisation since NKF times. Now, I choose carefully. I derive more assurance buying a bag of rice/food and giving it to a needy person than putting $10 to an organisation.

What is the point of doing all the charitable works, walking on cables, the ice thingy, etc?...get folks to donate and yet spending the $ on his own?

LV? Mont Blanc?...whose money? $60 000 loan? whose money?

Never believe in those 1900-XXXXXX, per call $5, $10, etc. Wanna do good deeds? Go spend some time, volunteer work in orphanges and old folks home. Those people there will be more than happy to have your company.

What is the point in you donating all those $ and don't know how they going to spend it? you pay for their Merc? you pay for their LV and Mont Blanc? Go figure it out.

Monks?...pls lah...even if want to spend also do it discreetly...be a bit humble and don't need to be so flashy. You'll never catch our Ministers, MM, or any high profile person on shopping spree in LV or paragon. At least they know how to get others to do it for them.

                            No offence to anyone...my 0.05cents.

                            Cheers!

Guess they started out with very good and sincere intentions, but along the way, he and his cohorts lost their moral direction.
Absolute power breeds Abuse of authority and greed. Suddenly he thought he is the numero uno, thereby all these impropriety.
Also did MP Ong know whether the $60K loan made to him done properly?
