  • Advise on buying watch from overseas seller..

I am on the verge of buying an AP ROO Volcano from an overseas private seller located in the US and would appreciate the following advise from our fellow Bros:

    (1) What is the best mode of payment, TT or Paypal?

    (2) Is my purchase (in the region of SGD 20,000) subject to any GST
    or local customs charges?

    (3) How can I ensure that I will receive the watch after payment has
been made. In other words, what is the foolproof method of not
    getting conned?

To be frank, would advise you not to make any big purchases online... the risks are just too great.. However, if you decide to go ahead......

    1) If you are the buyer, paypal will be better.. they do have a buyer protection scheme which supposedly protects the buyer. BUT i don't know if it applies for your kind of purchase (It works for purchases from ebay)

    2) I'm sure you'll insure the item. Thus, the seller will have to disclose the value of the item before the delivery company can advise hw much to charge for the insurance. Meaning, you should be subjected to GST as it is definitely over SGD$400.

    3) No foolproof method. If the seller wants to scam you, you can be sure you will have a super hard time getting back your $.

as already mentioned. it is a big sum of cash. im sure you can get it locally. just a matter of pricing.

      1) neither. why? because TT means immediate transfer and the goods may not arrive. even if u use paypal, you may not get your watch either.

      2) yes. it is subjected to local GST.

      3) none.

first, u can ask buyer to place the watch against today papers. this is to ensure that the seller indeed does have the watch. assume that you use paypal, inform seller about it and ask him to show you proof of sending immediately.

should you suspect something is not right, u can still 'stop' payment.

anyway, i dont see the reason why u want to take such risk. if i want, i would get it locally and pay a slightly higher price for peace of mind

Bro... the guys has spoken.... it's a straight NO......Personally... I would say do not go ahead as the amount in question is just too large..... moreover, even if the watch does arrived...how can you guarantee the condition as per what seller describe.. may just come with a big case ding.. and you can't do anything about it then....

Just not too long ago... a fellow bro here posted that he got scammed and had a very hard time getting his $$$ back.. and his is only ard $5k.. (i say "only" bcos yours is $20k)....

Keep us posted if you do go ahead...

GST you can claim as "return for service"; but it may/may not work.
