I believe WL is referring to his experience with gatherings organised on the forum which are open to all members, not by invitation.

It is not a special invite . The invite is posted in the forum, just keep a look out for it.

sometimes people choose to talk among themselves because they got chemistry.
True, some people could be reluctant to move once they settled down and/or are engaged in interesting discussion. If so they shouldn't be forced to.

Unlikely those social gatherings which your boss or your mother ask you to attend, you join a forum gathering out of your own wish. Hence I believe it would help for the organizer to set the scene to make a gtg more interactive. I could be wrong though, which is why I also ask to share one's pupose of joining the gtg.

Maybe some join the gtg to look for boyfriend and so only stick to his target...

I agreed that when someone organise a gtg, it would be helpful to state the purpose of the gtg.
                For e.g.
If a particular gtg is to have a more serious interaction on watches and those who feel that they are not in the right frame of mind should not attend so as to respect the theme of the gtg. Or
If that gtg is for just a casual gathering to catch with each other life, then those who feel that they are not ready to share their feel might want to give it a miss.
I feel that this will set the right mood for the gtg without causing any discomfort to certain folks.

Not a bad idea to have variety in term of different themes, so long as it doesn't become too formal. Most just want to relax and have funs.

Formal or casual, good social manners should be observed, I feel.

Been to the gathering twice and was happy making friends with the other members.
It has been fun sharing our interest in watches and also seeing each other's watches.

Of course there will be some other members which I can click with much better.

It has been so much enjoyment meeting like-minded members, and hope to make more friends who may also sharing similar
interests such as sports, wine appreciation and concerts!

By the way, talking about our pets especially about dogs is one of the favorite topics!
Showed them pics of my mini schnauzer too! Woof!!

been to few gatherings and made some real good friends from there...some still keep in regular contact (went dinner tog, BBQ, facebook, whassapp and etc)...others became the people I turn to when I have some watch questions because I trust them and value their opinions...regretfully, I think I lost touch with some of them partly because i've been pretty occupied..however, it's always nice to log in regularly to see what they're up to...

so far all the gatherings are very friendly but the funny thing is I feel strong affinity with the "older" batch members than the newer ones...

                            Well said WL…

I’m an old geezer now and I’ve seen my fair share of different types of people in social gatherings.

In any gatherings, in attendance are people in the “high-class” while some are not.
Some people only THINK they are “high-class” but actually are not.
There are also some people who like to be with the “high-class” group so that they get a chance to act like one.
Some people are influenced to be “high-class” when actually they don’t fit in but don’t realise.
There are some who are actually “high-class” but behave like they’re not.

So it takes all kinds to make this world.

But this forum is not about “class”…it’s about passion & interest in the horology world.

GTGs are organized so that we can interact with one another, at least put a face to your nick.

                            Cheers!
